Janxi sighed with relief too. She thought of a few things to ask for, but decided to leave it to Sam. Her posture relaxed, and her hair fell back along her neck. To be sure all was well, she glanced over at Tori. The little cat seemed quieted, so she assumed a far less lethal posture than before.

The elders looked at one another, and those that could sense it felt a buzz of psychic activity. Nala's father spoke again. " We are in short supply of boats, but we do have some in need of repair. We are not mechanics, so if you can repair one, you make take it to where ever you need to go."
" It is the other direction, but I would go to the Marlin village first." Added another elder. " Only a days travel south by air boat.
Shep looked at Sam and shrugged. " Guess it wouldn't hurt, Captain."

Tori stepped up and looked at the elder, not quite in the eye, showing her deference to his position. "Sir, a cub named Shan seemed to know his way 'round a tool box when we was comin' in. Mebbe if he could help our mechanic, we could learn him a few new tricks about how to keep yer boats runnin' longer. Then he could fix a few more of them busted boats for y'all."
It seemed to make sense. Shan knew how to get water out of a carb, so he had to know enough to help Richardson, who she assumed could repair an engine. Maybe they could at least collaborate. If Richardson knew tricks Shan didn't, the village would be that much closer to having a mechanic after a lesson.

Janxi wondered what Tori was up to. Adding a boy cub wouldn't help Richardson much. Maybe slightly. Not enough for her to make the request. She watched, keeping her mind silent, and knowing the humans could probably listen in on a conversation.

Sam smiles politely at the elders and says, "That would be acceptable, and any help you can give us is appreciated." Sam looks over at Shep and nods, "Agreed." Sam then asks the elders politely, "Unless there is anything else you wish to discuss, we will take our leave."

"No you are free to leave." Nala's father replied, and the large man that had brought them in ushered them out . Shep looked at the others, "see? That wasn't so bad."
The brute led them to the outskirts of the village, where two vine covered boats sat in sad condition. " You fix one, you can have it. Other one good for parts." He said, then turned to leave.
"Okay, so I spoke too soon. Anyone got any mechanical training?" Shep sighed.

"No, unfortunately." Socrates says. "But, hopefully, that won't keep me from getting a sense of the problem." walking over to the boat with the most solid-looking hull, he uses his Object Read powers to feel for the boat's history, and maybe why it was abandonned.

"No, they teach us cats to blow up stuff, but we ain't got enough sense to know how to fix stuff," Tori said ironically. It was the CS's policy to leave animals as dependent on humans as possible. If they could fix their own weapons, armor and vehicles, they would be that much more independent. That threatened humans.
The little cat restored the cover to her head and slipped her sunglasses on. "Too bad they wouldn't loan us Shan. I'll betcha he could have at least helped. What about you, Richardson?" She got a purr to her voice thinking of her favorite human. "Yer a combat engineer. Know anything about boat motors?"

"Well, we could rustle up some paddles or somethin," Janxi said and sighed. She realized they probably would have to trudge across the swamp. "Yeah, that cub coulda helped maybe."

Richardson shrugs his shoulders as he moves towards the boat, "I'd much rather build a bomb or two, but let me see what I can do."
He looks the two boats over with a cursory visual inspection to see which one was in better shape.

Richardson inspection quickly determined only one of the boats was fit to go out on the water thanks to a large gouge in the hull of the other. The motor looked like it should be repairable if he canaballized the other one.
Socrates psi connection with the air boat told him it had been abandoned because of abuse. In fact he recognized the riders as two of the boys they had rescued earlier in the day.
Many eyes watched the strangers at the edge of camp, until Nala approached witha woman carrying a child. " His father forbids him to help, but Shan said to bring these for you to use in thanks." She held out a heavy satchel full of tools. " I wish to ask a favor of your doctor. This is Danni and her mother Rhane. Danni is very sick, but we don't know what is wrong with her. Will you help?"

Sam takes the satchel of tools and smiles at Nala. "Thank you. These will definitely come in handy for making the repairs to the boat." Sam then hands the tools over to Richardson and nods, "Certainly. Doctor, if you could take a look?"

Tori knew sick cubs were out of her league, but had enough first aid ability that she could handle some support for Autumn, if needed. "Capt'n Sam? I could maybe help Dr. Santiago with her patient, if she needs an extra set of hands. Otherwise, I could either help Richardson with the heavy lifting, but don't know nothin' about fixin' motors. If neither of them need help, mebbe I could get us all some chow. Whaddya think?"
She couldn't do any of the benchwork rebuilding or replacing a motor, but she could carry heavy parts. Finding food would keep her busy too. She waited for Shep or Sam to give her some direction.

Socrates stood back from his examination of the boats. "I sense nothing but that they are over-used." He said to Richardson. "By the very same children we helped, no less. What help will you need?"

Janxi promised to help Richardson with the heavy work of moving the motor.
It was then that she saw Tori's tail and was hypnotized by it's slight movement. Everything and everyone in the room was forgotten except the mission at hand and that was silent predatory stalking of the tail. Her ears flicked ever so slightly as the adrenaline rose a notch as she crouched into position with her eyes locked on the target. This was going to be fun because it had been a while since her and Tori had played this game. Slowly the predator moved closer and stopped, an ear flicked and her tail twitched. Almost there and Tori had no clue her tail was being stalked. A quick graceful move as she slithered closer still until a large paw reached out and swatted the tail not once but twice in rapid succession.
