Sarah fights the urge to sigh and replies quietly, "I'm sure Mom will survive the disappointment and be ok in the end." She thinks about how it felt when they were in the theatre and says "It felt like a cave." After a minute, she asks "Wait. What did you mean that Coop's officially part fo the gang now? Hasn't he always been part of the gang?" (tag)

Moltavius sighs, looking very sad for Sarah. "I really wish you had someone else to grow up with that's in your position." Taking a breath, he says, "Our group, yes. Coop's one of us. And he's welcome to be." He adds with a grin. "But, the city itself, it's another matter. You remember, as a child how you'ld ask how to know when the city needed help. And I'ld say that the city would tell you when it did? That's what the visions are. By including Coop in the visions, the city's saying it wants his help, too." He pauses for more juice. "Among the old Decree Family lines, the visions happen as a matter of course. You probably have them more than you realise. But, outside the families, only those dedictated to th protectin of the city get them. But, it's a fine line, and the city decides who crosses that line itself. People like Eleutheroi and Tobrias get them periodically, for major issues, and I've heard of a few freelancers having them as well. So, when I say that Coop's officially part of the gang, I don't mean the Guild and its enforcer types. I mean the City's gang of defenders."
Turning to Coop, he says "And you better not screw it up." With a wink.

Coop covered hisnose as orange juice burned his sinuses after he nearly gagged on his drink. Eyes watering, he set the glass down and waited a moment before responding. His wide eyed stare at mr. Lockhart probably betrayed his surprise. " Me? But I'm just a screw up side kick." He pointed at Sarah to cut off any protests." Don't argue with me on this one. You do all the work usually, I'm just there for moral support and the occasional assist with the easy stuff." He looked back at her father," What could make the city want me to step up from the practice team?" He didn't sound like he was arguing with the idea, more like he was just looking for some understanding.

“Well, Coop.” Says Moltavius, “Thing is…”
Scene change!!
The apartment kitchen vanishes and is suddenly replaced with a exaggerated 1950’s-style lab. Crowded amongst tables of test tubes and electronic lights and read-outs are various ongoing experiments.
The camera focuses on Moltavius, a man in his 50’s, showing his age in his belly, wearing a stark white lab coat. Next to him is the decidedly taller, thinner Eleutheroi. (Yeah, yeah. May Jim Henson (bless his soul) take the blame for inspiring this.)
“Today.” Says Moltavious, in a genial tone, “We’ll explain how the City of Golthreia grants visions. First, my assistant Eleutheroi is wheeling over an easel with a diagrammatic explanation.” Indeed, the tall, thin Elf pushes in a chart with a crudely drawn side-view of the city, from the main gate. A giant arrow curves from the city towards the stick figure. “As you can see here, the city, when it decides a person is truly dedicated to defending the city against monsters, it sends that person a vision.” Moltavius flips the page, and the next one shows, the stick figure with a thought balloon. “The vision often comes in crude images and impressions that help the person know where his help is most needed. Often, it’s to destroy some demon predator.” Flipping the page, it shows the stick man, with a bloodied knife, over a dead demon-looking stickman (ie: green with horns on the head).
Stepping away from the easel, Moltavius walks to a large machine. “Now, my assistant Eleutheroi and I will demonstrate how selective the visions are, using this arc welder.”
Pulling off the tarp, there is a crudely-constructed large electrical arc-welder thing. On the side is ‘Simulated Vision Delivery Apparatus.’ With ‘point away from face’ in small letters underneath. Eleutheroi pauses, stepping away from his designated spot.
“Oh, don’t worry, Eleutheroi.” Moltavius says. “I’ve toned it down to be non-lethal.”
Worriedly, Eleutheroi resumes his position in front of a big red “X”.
“Now, watch, as we activate the vision.” Says Moltavius. With a hum, the machine turns on, and then an electrical arc jumps between the two teeth of the device. Slowly, Moltavius inches the device to Eleutheroi, who starts shaking madly and whimpering. “You, know it’s better if you turn around, Eleutheroi. No-one sees a vision coming anyways.” Eleutheroi turns away… then is zapped.
After a series of yelps and dimming lights, everything turns off. “Now, to demonstrate, understanding, please pick up the light bulb, Eleutheroi.” Moltavius says. Within a moment, Eleutheroi is holding a lit lightbulb in his hand, smoke whisping from his body. A grinning Moltavius with goggles barely showing.
Eleutheroi puts down the bulb. Soon after, the lights come on. “Now, we’ll demonstrate how impartial the visions are. We’ve seen it work on a lab assistant. Now, let’s see how it works on your typical office clerk.”
Eleutheroi re-appears, looking down and seeing he’s wearing a brown tweed suit and hat. His hair still smoking under the head. “Eep.” He whimpers, as the welder turns on again. Lights go off. Eleuetheroi shakingly holds the bulb, flickering light bouncing any number of shadows. “Success!” Says Moltavius in the darkness. “As you can see the vision affects people equally, regardless of the situation, or their walk in life..."
And...
Normalcy!!
“So, Zachary.” Moltavius says. “It doesn’t matter how you view yourself in all hits. Just how the city views you. Understand? Now. We’ll see if you can do this without the Guild. So, I suggest Old World Antiquities. Crynn-Jol should have old books on the few major caves in the region.”

Coop nodded his understanding. " I understand. Guess I was just a little surprised is all. Of course I'll do whatever is needed." He had a few more questions, but he let them slide for now. He smirked at Alice." Now I really want to be able to go out to gramps and get my truck with all the running around we've been doing."

A tiny smile appears as Sarah tries to hide how uncomfortable the idea going back to the farm makes her. "Yeah," she says quietly, "we should get that done." (tag)

Coop read Sarah's answer like a book, and replied in the same hushed tone. " I already told you I can do this by myself. I can handle it. " The last sounded like he was trying to convince himself as much as Sarah and her father. " I won't make you face that place again."

Sarah nods at Coop and gets up and gives him a hug, reading his tone as well as he was able to read hers. "I know you did," she says softly, "but I said I would go with you for support and I'm going to do just that." Giving him another hug, she sits back down at the table, she nods at her father, "That's a good idea. Hopefully Crynn-Jol will have something that will help us." (tag)

" You should come over more often," Coop smirked at Moltavius, " I never get this much attention before lunch." He kidded, trying to lighten the mood. " If a visit from your dad is all it takes, we should try to find a place closer to them so he drops in more often." His smirk grew to a full blown grin. " But seriously, is there anything I need to learn to do because of the defender thing, or is it more of a do what you can kind of deal?"

"Well, I'ld say, go to see Crynn'Jol at Old World first." Moltavius says. "And keep me informed. I may be semi-retired, but I'm still senior Decree Slayer in this city." He says, winking at Sarah. "We'll meet in the guild library a little later. I'm sure Tobrias has, socked away, something that can help us."

Sarah smiles at her father's wink. "I have a break in-between classes this afternoon. I can head down to Old World then." Turning to Coop, she asks "Did you want to go with me?" (tag)

" Of course. I've got a late morning class, so I'll just hang around until you get out." Coop replied. " I can meet you in the commons." He looked at Moltavius and grinned, " shouldn't we ask Mrs. Lockhart if you can come out and play first? I don't want her mad at me for you coming out of retirement."

"Who's working? I'm just talking to my kid and her boyfriend." Moltavius says, rising from the table. "And thanks for the juice." At the door, he pauses and turns. "For your mother's sake, and probably mine, could you make sure you get a 2-bedroom place? Thanks."

Sarah smiles at her father "Sure, that's not a problem." Mentally shrugging, she figures it would be nice to have the extra space so they're not cramped into a small 1 bedroom apartment and it would make her parents feel better about her living arrangements. (tag)

(ooc: It was a two bedroom place. didn't Sarah originally take the other room when she moved in?)
" Where's the fun in that?" Coop smiled. " It's the boyfriends job to make mom and dad worry, isn't it?" He laughed before adding. " We'll see what we can find."
