Duke almost winced "Lieutenant, ya wound me. after all, a happy customer is a repeat customer" he rubbed his chin for a moment as if thinking over her proposal, looking back and forth between Sam and Tyneer "ya drive a hard bargain, but ah suppose for tha sake o' public relations with the CS, ah can eat tha 2%."
"we'll jus' chalk 'er up ta a 'first-time customer' promotion. it's well spent. ya won't regret a single cred o' it." Duke entered the agreed upon amount via his head-jack connection into the e-contract Sam was still holding "now if ya'd be so kind as ta jus' enter yer security authorization code, and ya got yerself a deal"

Sam shakes her head firmly. "Nope, payment upon completion of task. However," she adds, "so that you know we're up front and we're not planning on trying to short change you, we can pay half now and the rest when the mission is complete." Showing him the cred stick Shep had given her, she says "What do you say?"

Rhys without looking up, still leaning back in the Mountaineer seat. "It's a short-term assignment. At least this mission is. A flat rate would be more the norm would it not?"

Duke holds up a hand waving them off "hold on there, Lieutenant. this ain't some back-alley deal y'er makin' with some roof-rat we're talkin' about. this is business. ya think I'm gonna renig on the CS? I might be crazy, but I ain't stupid. ya think I want or need that kinda heat? bad for business."
"last thing a merc like me needs is a bounty on his own head. you folks really are new at this, ain't ya? lemme save ya some time an' trouble. I'll explain how this works. everything's handled electronically per the terms o' my service contract. all that's non-negotiable. either ya agree to the terms or not"
"if we agree, which I thought we jus' did, all you do is 'sign' the contract with yer security access code that acts as yer digital 'sig' an' I send it off to 'never-never land', which activates my contract for services, generates a digital time-stamp, starts the clock tickin' an' authorizes the payments."
"if ya don't agree, ya don't sign. no 'sig'? no contract. no contract? no service. simple as that. the transfers will all be handled an' automatically sent to my 'universal' account. same thing happens with my expenses so save yer creds." Duke looks at Tyneer "kinduva skittish crew ya got here"

" Dammit Duke, you know damned well why she can't sign that." Joshua interrupted. " Look at them, this is no regular army crew you're dealing with. You do a standard exchange, and you know as well as I do you'll blow their cover." He looked at Sam and Rhys, " Am I close?"

The offer must not have been interesting to Duke, Socrates thought, or he probably would have taken the offer. He wondered why a person named Sung would be of such interest to one group of mercenaries, but of such concern for another. The Dog Boy made a mental note to make sure CS command knew about this.
It was interesting they spent so little time discussing mercenaries with the Dog Boys on longer-range missions. Surely the Dog Boys needn't have to bargain with the unenlightened, but it would be wise to prepare them to be patient for it...
In any event, he would like them to make a final decision, soon...

Sam glances over at Tyneer and nods briefly to indicate that his guess was correct. She was glad someone seemed to understand what was going on and didn't need to have everything spelled out for them. 'After all,' she thinks to herself 'it kind of defeats the purpose if I go around telling everyone we're a special black-ops crew'

Rhys finally sits up and nods to Tyneer, "Almost dead on infact."

Duke started to interject " ... but it's a scrambled ... " then trailed off thinking. as much as he hated to admit, Tyneer was right. encrypted or not, any halfway decent hacker with a captured CS radio would be able to decode it in a matter of hours. the only way to reliably secure any transmission was with a directional antenna to close the beam, which he didn't have. he could probably cobble one together, but this group was getting antsy "a'right, how 'bout we compromise? you sign and pay me what you said up front, but I won't send it 'til after y'er mission? I'll wait 'til then to make the 'official' submissions?"

"How about submitting it in person, after we complete our objective." *voice completely neutral*

Socrates finally decides this negotiation has gone on long enough. Regardless of how it happens, he needs to find a way home, and this meeting dragging on was not going to help him
Speaking up, he says, "If only the means to claim the payment is under negotiation, maybe we ought to proceed with the parts of this action that matters? Like the objectives, timing... and so on?"

Rhys looks to the Dog Boy, "Because as with everything there is a process of how its done. You mess up one of those steps and it messes the whole thing up. Or at least that's what they would have you believe."

Tyneer finally had enough, and interjected. " I suggest a comprimise. Duke, what about if you are paid three days up front, hard ' universal' credits, and you collect the difference when Sam and her squad are returned to her base, or pick up point, whichever she desires. If you agree, we can move on like your canine companion suggests." He looked at the others, " Agreed?"

Duke grimaced again, but agreed "a'right, just sign an' we'll be on our merry way" indicating the contract to Sam

Sam shakes her head at Duke and says firmly "Paying you that amount now means I'm not signing anything. You get paid, we get our job done. I'm not signing anything since it'll pretty much amount to signing my death warrant no matter when you decide to send it."
