Solomon sighed, shaking his head and looking at Avi. "bad news, REAL bad news. shadow beasts. Fielder must have summoned them as retainers. his 'continency plan' in case the council intervened. he sent them here, knowing he would be brought back here. your team saved the Council and themselves the same fate by holding him, until one of the damned fools brought him here."
"as soon as he showed up here, they sealed their fates." looking back to Kendall keeping the pistol lowered "how many of them were there? any idea?" as he quickly moved towards the doors, waving Avi on with his pistol, motioning for him to follow and take up position on the opposite side of the door, he whispered. "watch my back, and try to keep an eye on Kendall"

" I don't know for sure, maybe three or four?" Kendall replied. "I don't think Fielder was the one who summoned the creatures. He was one of the first ones attacked. Not unless he lost his hold on them."
" Solomon, this keeps sounding worse and worse." Avi said, drawing one of his own weapons. " We're going in with those things, aren't we?"
[ Lore was bang on with shadow beasts. And Sol can't sense anything inside the council room, except the residual of the spell that sealed the door, though it was fading]

Solomon nods at Avi "you're right. it's not good. what bothers me most is that I can't sense them. I should be able to and so should the others. something is really wrong with this whole picture, but I don't see where we have a choice. if those things escape, they could kill hundreds of innocent people. they hunt from the darkness and shadows. we need light. all the light we can get. light weakens them."
"in their natural habitat of darkness and shadows, they're insanely powerful predators. going in there and fighting them on their terms would be suicide, but with enough light, we might stand a chance. I have a spell, but it's not much. nowhere near what we need. they can hide in the smallest shadow. I can also offer us some protection, but what about you? have anything that could help us?"

" Just a flshlight." Avi replied, patting a maglight on his belt. " and if I use my powers, the explosion is pretty bright." He replied with a shrug. " Hey, if you can't feel them, are you sure they haven't gone?"

"no, I'm not sure of anything at this point, but let's hope not. if they've managed to escape, we've got even bigger problems. if I open the doors or use a spell to have a look inside, can you hold the line at the doors and make sure nothing gets past you?"
turning his attention back to Kendall "you said Nathaniel was hurt? where is he? in there?" indicating the council chamber

" No, Mr. Ridgmont left with one of the other council member. Not sure where Mr. Hassleback took him." Kendall replied. Solomon knew Yuri Hassleback was one of the founding members, as well as one of the guild's strongest members.
" I can hold the door if you open it." Avi nodded.

Solomon nodded for Avi to get ready as he readied a spell "use the flashlight" as he reached for the door, then hesitated, pausing as he thought of something, then backing away "on second thought, you open the door while I cast" he began to summon an arcane barrier (mystic shield, 10 ppe) across the doorway trying to time it just right as Avi opened the doors

" Okay" Avi pulled out a flashlightand then moved next to the door. " on three. One...Two... Three," he pulled the door open to reveal the carnage inside. the smell was the first thing to escape.

Solomon quickly got the arcane barrier in place across the doorway. an opaque, semi-transparent wall of bluish-white mystic energy (60 sdc for 1 minute), and immediately began casting Globes of Daylight (2 ppe each x 5) into the room beyond the barrier, spacing them about the room at regular 10' overlapping intervals to thoroughly illuminate the area with daylight, moving them slowly in unison trying to expose every shadow (3 minutes each)

Other than the dismembered bodies of a few of his collueges, the room was empty. In the middle was Fielder, or what was left of him, and Solomon could make out the bodies of at least four other members, though it was hard to tell. there was no sign of the shadow beasts.
" It looks like a war zone in there." Avi said, one of his pistols in hand.

Solomon stood in silent shock at the carnage and destruction that had taken place in what was once a refuge and sanctuary to him. slowly looking over to Avi, he could plainly see the horror written on Solomon's face "I ... I'm sorry. I just need a moment to collect myself. nothing could have prepared me for ... " he slowly trailed off " ... those are ... were ... my colleagues ... my friends ... "

" Understood." Avi said with understanding. " I've been there. I'll give you a couple minutes, if you need me, I'll be right out here."
He stepped away from the doorway. Kendall was nowheres in sight, but he could be heard getting sick somewheres near by.

"no" Solomon called to Avi "I'm ... it's alright ... I've just never witnessed such barbarous brutality and savagery. they were butchered" as he tried to regain his composure. his brow furrowed as his jaw tightened. Avi could tell he was trying to steel himself to enter the sanctuary
"let's do this and get it over with" as he dropped the barrier and entered the room with his pistol at the ready. He approached the bodies and knelt by each one, and in turn closed their eyes peering lifelessly up at him "go in peace, my brothers and sisters. you will be avenged"

All told, there were sven bodies inside, most of them savagely torn apart by the shadow beasts, telling the lights had gone out to strengthen them. All but one, as Avi motioned for Solomon to one body. " this one is different. Something blasted him in the chest."
It was another member of the guild council, Hiram Grohl. Usually the guild's most pasifist leader.

Solomon goes over to Hiram's corpse and leans down to examine it. he casts another quick succession of two spells (see aura, 6 ppe and see the invisible, 4 ppe) before proceeding, hoping to get a glimpse of any tell-tale residual arcane energy patterns or signatures. (34/65% criminal science roll to try to tell what kind of blast it was that killed him, estimated time of death, recreate the crime scene, etc. 1d100=34 ) |
