Ray Palmer scratches his beard. He's hated it, but he hasn't had any time to shave in the last 5 months.
Not since the Watchtower was destroyed. The grim reminder hardened him, even as his partner shouted at him.
"Palmer! Stop dawdling and make those last connections! Do I have to do everything myself?" Lex Luthor storms over to the control panel where Ray is standing.
"My team is being cut to pieces out there by your ex-teammate and you're too busy looking at your own reflection!" Lex pushes Ray aside as he checks the controls. "Good. You actually managed to finish it after all. I suppose the small things are what you're best for." Luthor shoots a grin as he lights up the display board.
"Lex, mind telling me again where all the equipment came from? It's not like you'd have easy access to a particle accelerator."
"First rule of defense contracting, Professor Palmer; always make sure you create a market for spare parts." Lex smiles ruefully. "and it's not like I still don't have some contacts in the Defense Department. Now, let's see if we can take out your friend here with the Dissociator cannon."
"It'll kill him."
"I would hope so. "
The giant steel doors to the bay glow red-hot, then white, before dissolving like a spring shower. The armored tyrant stands before the pair.
"Your team is permenantly disbanded Luthor. I would offer you the chance to surrender, but we both know you're too dangerous to live."
"Thank you for the compliment. I'll carve it on your headstone" Luthor slams the activation button.
The room vibrates as the cannon flares to life, engulfing Monarch in a column of red light, as pulse after pulse washes over him.
Ray feels a tightness in his stomach. He looks at the controls, and he sees the power flucuate. More than was possible.
"Lex! You have to stop! Something's wrong!" But Luthor couldn't hear him over the humming of the machine and his own ranting. You couldn't hear what he was saying before the cannon exploded.
Seconds? Minutes? Later, Ray Palmer manages to shrink his way out of the debris. Re-enlarging, he sees the entire base that Lex constructed has been reduced to rubble. Despite the explosion, Ray could make out the dark red sunset in the distance. It was the end of a beautiful day.
"Ray?" Monarch is standing before him, his armor showing not even a scratch. "Ray. Luthor's gone now. I'm sorry this had to happen, but you know he had to go. There's no reason for you to do any more. It's over. Please just stop trying to fight me. We were friends-"
"You don't deserve friends. After what you did to the League."
"Ray, please."
"and I'd sooner be dead than hear you say my name one more time." Ray hits his belt controls and launches himself at Monarch. "But I think I'll blow you up from the inside out first!"
Monarch raises an armored hand. "I'm sorry you feel that way. Goodbye."
The Atom can feel the flash of energy engulfing him. He simply smiles and presses on, ignoring the pain the smell of his own burning flesh.
