Eh, quasi-random rollers are fine. You'll notice the other posters roll for themselves as well, when needed, so you're free to do so.

If she were to fail that detecting magic roll, she would either not notice anything mystical about it, or get it confused. "What do you mean it destroyed the guardhouse? I thought it was the "summon fried chicken with 12 kinds of spices" rune... Yes, I know that seemed unlikely, but mages are some pretty weird folks, you know?"

Her hand was cold... dead... but smooth and silky, like the proper moisturizer had been used. She smelled of vanilla.

At about that time Eleutheroi interrupted. "I think this meeting has gone on long enough." He was standing next to the table.

She look disturbedly up to the Elf. "This wasn't your meeting,assassin."

"Maybe not, but he is my charge, and there is water in the fire suppression system." Eleutheroi answered, with a lighter in his hand, his chin motioning to the ceiling sprayer above the table behind him, that would have easily caught her in the spray. "Choose your tables better nect time.

"Qell. Fine." She says. Recovering, she adds, for Coop's benefit "But, think about what I said, OK?", she adds, batting her eyes.

30 to read, 50 to recognize magic. So she can read all the runes, but if they form a curse she doesn't realize it.

Coop immediately stood from his seat with the envelope in hand. " Put it away El, no need to make a scene." He looked back at the vampire, " I'll get back to you with an answer." He turned to Eleutheroi, his emotions split between relief from him ending it there and annoyed because he'd intervened. " Let's get going then."

It was a whole book written using Runes as a language and, theoretically, not just as a magical tool (though it would be hard to tell without some real study). Such a book would have to be ancient, though probably written casually, assuming anyone that followed would be able to read it. Also, the style of runes looks familiar to Bianca, the way Chaucerian English, or Robbie Burns' Scotts English look familiar to us. In short, it was going to be a difficult read. However, the title, translating as Yon Histoire Being Now Tolde of Those Guards Royales Defending This City of the Five Towers (or some-such), would make it at least an interesting history piece. Also, the fact that the Decree Slayers are the descendants of the Royal Guard of King Ienni, the last King of Golthreia, would make it even more topical (hooray for plot anvils!). The book itself is more than a thousand years old, if the publication date and archaic language were to be believed... though it looks like it was only recently printed.

As Coop walked out, he could see his reflection in the windows of the restaurant, and Eleutheroi's. "I wasn't being dramatic." Eleutheroi said calmly when they were outside. "It seemed to be having too much of an effect on you and it needed to be stopped. What's in the envelope?"

" She was just tlaking." Coop replied, handing over the envelope. " They want to make a truce of sorts. We leave them alone and take of the other threats to the city and they'll start working on the criminals. I think it sounds like a good deal for now since there's no way I can go after the vamps on my own anyways."

Dramatic cut scene!!

"How could you even entertain something like that!?!" Tobrias asked. If ever he was angry, it was now. "An alliance with any kind of demon is your doom. Why do you think witchcraft and pact-magic are illegal?"

" Who said anything about pact making? You think I'd do anything that stupid?" Coop tried to stay civil despite being on the defensive, " Been there, done that, got the emotional scars to prove it, remember? Look, all I'm proposing is we cut them just enough slack to let them take out some of the city's other vermin. In fact, as long as I steer clear of the bloodsuckers, then I'm keeping my side of the bargain. I don't care if all Lateric and his buddies load up with water pistols and march into thier lair and wipe them all out. Besides, you know as well as I do I'm not ready to go after them yet."

Tobrias raises an eyebrow. "Think, Zachary. Think about why they would remove Sarah and then suddenly broker a deal with the next in line? Why not remove Eleutheroi, or myself? If they could remove mafias, the whole of the guild's not far off. And I don't see a single Guild member in these photos. So, why, all of a sudden, try to get you to back down?"

Bianca takes the book and searches for some old guides to translating runes, books that wouldn't so much help her translate the runes as the words themselves.

For good measure, she also hunts down a couple good language study books from the appropriate time period. She sits down at a table and spreads all her reference books around and begins.

First she skims the rune book looking for any writings which deal directly with her search. Each likely point, she bores in deeper into the material, taking careful notes, comparing passes to each other and double checking her translations for consistency using her notes.

" I don't know, maybe because I'm new at this an easy to dupe?" Coop replied with a shrug. " You've got all the answers, you tell me why they'd bother talking and not just kill me when they had a golden opportunity. El's good, but she could have gutted me she wanted to before he knew what happened."

As Bianca finished her set-up, the head librarian emerges from one of the stacks. "What have you got there?" He asks. "You seem to have checked out every book on runes and translations."

(Coop)
Tobrias sighs disappointedly. "You still are not thinking." He says. "If you cannot find the answers for youself, it will never matter who else has them, because you will only hear them, and never think of what they mean. List the events to date."

"I won't be sure until I delve into it," Bianca grinned, "But it promises to be quite challenging so it should be fun."

Bianca buries her head back into the book.

" I'm thinking,"Coop replied, " I'm thinking we've already had this discussion. Everyone knows whats going on except dumb Zach Cooper. I'm tired of this stupid game and don't want to play anymore." He stood up, trying to decide whether or not to walk out. " Maybe the reason I listened to the vamp is because she came right out and said what she wanted. So unless that wason the level or it was just some kind of scam to discredit me, not that it would be hard, I haven't got a clue what it was about. "

In here lieth the hystoire anciene of the Guardes Royale to the Kings Ioratates (the last clan to rule the city), in the dynastic eras paste and presente... Thise be a booke alive that telleth the eventes of note that did happen in their lives.

"Sit down, Mr. Cooper." Tobrias said. "You are no longer simply a member of a sports team. If you want to become any kind of success, you have to start feeling around for ideas and stop acting like we are witholding them from you. Defending against such accusations grows tiresome and increasingly pointless."

Taking a breath, he says. "Consider it a part of your training, since, in this case, you have the luxury of time. Think of every reason besides the your obvious one where you assume everyone simply wants to take advantage of you. What do you think the goal of the Vampires would be, if they were to remove other members of the human criminal underworld, especially the leaders?"

Coop listened and retook his seat as Tobrias told him. He thought for a moment, then shrugged," I gues if they took out the bosses, then they could run things themselves. Or eliminate the competitiion."
