Mary Ellen also starts to back up slowly, a little confused by Charger's reluctance to go any further without her. Her main concerns were to keep Edeline safe and to get back to the ranch unharmed, as she waits to see if there's any reactions to Amos's call.

The three hear a growl and Edeline starts to whimper a little as Goodwyn backs back. Betheny seems calm, and Charger's starting to get agitated. "Show yourself. No games or I shoot." Amos said, calmly. His rifle was trained on the source of the growl: a pair of glowing eyes.

Starting to feel even more concerned, Mary Ellen tells Edeline "It's ok. Keep backing up slowly. We'll protect you and Goodwyn." Glancing back at her, she says "If I tell you to, ride back to the ranch as fast as you can, ok?" Mary Ellen then faces forward and stares at the glowing eyes, trying to see if she can tell what they are attached to.

As she tries to see what it is, the beast charges. It lept right towards Mary-Ellen, even as Amos tried to get a bead on it.
Edeline screamed.

Mary Ellen's eyes open wide, and before she has a chance to wonder why the beast is attacking her when Amos has a gun and is closer, she attempts to get out of the creature's way (dodge: 14+4=18). As she does this, she yells "Edy, go! As fast as you can!"

Mary-Ellen shifted her weight out of the way of lunging animal with unexpected grace. However, it was too sudden for poor Betheny, and Mary-Ellen landed on the ground with a hard thump.
The furry thing sailed past Mary-Ellen as a shot echoed through the field. With a loud yelp, a mangy-looking dog landed and rolled, clearly bleeding out from the neck.
Betheny was startled, but was between Mary-Ellen and the dog. Goodwyn, however, was clearly frightened (having never seen or been near a gunshot before, let alone one hitting an animal), and Edeline was having a hard time controlling her. Edeline herself was a wreck.
Amos, noting priorities gallopped past Mary-Ellen and proceeded to help calm Goodwyn and Edeline, leaving Mary-Ellen to her own devices.

Mary Ellen gets up carefully and tests to see if she has hurt herself (sprained or broken anything) or if she is bleeding. Next she checks on Betheny to make sure she is ok and calm. If needed, she'll calm Betheny down, and once that is done, she'll make her way over to the dog to see how it is doing, careful not to get too close so it can't bite her.

The dog was twitching. Amos was a crack shot, with the bullet having entered and exited, with a pool of blood around it.
Mary-Ellen was sore from the landing, but would recover. Betheny was nudging her away from the dog, towards Amos and Edeline.

Mary Ellen pats Betheny on the head softly and heads over to where Amos and Edeline are. Smiling softly, she asks Edeline, "Are you ok?" Glancing over at Amos, she says "That was a good shot. Thank you."

"I'm... I'm OK." Edeline says between stifled sobs, not trying to sound afraid.
Amos was still soothing her as he looked over at Mary-Ellen with a Who-are-you? stare. "You're quite the contrast from our little Eddy here. Who did the right thing by staying back, kiddo." He adds, patting her on the back. "I have to make a call, let them know I found Ranger."
"Range?! No!" And Edeline breaks out crying.
"Ranger went feral a few weeks ago, for no reason." Amos says. "Gus'll want to see the car - " He paused, looking into Eddy's tear-filled doh-eyes. "He'll want to see Ranger, and see why he ran away, OK, kiddo?"
Eddy nodded weakly.

Mary Ellen pats Edeline on the arm in a comforting manner as she smiles weakly at Amos and shrugs at him as if to say 'Your guess is as good as mine'. When Edeline finds out it was Ranger, she gives her an awkward hug, patting her on the back lightly, trying to comfort her as Amos started to go and get Gus.

Edeline sobs into Mary-Ellen's arms as Amos pulls out a higher-tech CB device. He speaks into it super quiet "Gus? It's Amos. Yes, that was me. Ranger came after us. No, he's down. Yeah, but she moved quick and he didn't lay a hair on her. Yeah, I'll bring him in.... OK." Louder, he turns to the group. "Edeline, your dad wants to talk to you."
Snuffling still, Edeline takes the head-set and mumbles sobbingly to her father.
"I'm impressed. But, this only proves Gus is right, sorry, kiddo." He says, patting her on the back, but pauses before moving on. Wait... no, he couldn't be something disguised[/] as a human, could he?

Looking a bit confused, Mary Ellen asks "This proves that Gus was right about what?" she asks him as she studies him with a 'Who or what are you?' expression on her face.

Amos looked about as concerned as Mary-Ellen, having the very same expression on his face, locking eyes.
"...-mos?... Amos?... Amos? Amos?"Edeline was tugging his sleeve to get is attentino. "Amos? Daddy wants to talk to you. He says it would be OK to bury Ranger out here, but he wanted to talk to you about it." She was offering up the CB. Amos broke contact with Mary-Ellen and took the CB. "Sure, kiddo." He said, barely showing in his voice that something unnerving had just happened.

Mary Ellen keeps staring at Amos, wondering what had just happened. Shaking her head a little, she focuses on Edeline, and asks her "How are you doing?" In the back of her head, she keeps wondering why she would have gotten that feeling when Amos touched her and what it meant, and what in the world could he be if he wasn't human?
