Wilson nods, already taking notes. "Tell me, Mary-Ellen, what do you think of these rustlers around here? Edeline says Gus mentioned them after you arrived. So, as a completely fresh face, I was actually just curious as your impressions. You can be honest."

Mary Ellen blinks in surprise at Wilson's asking her what she thought of her impressions of the rustlers. "I'm not sure," she answers slowly, trying to find the right words "I'm not really sure if it's simply just rustlers. Wouldn't they try to steal cattle and not try to eat them? And why would the ranchers need magical weapons?" Mary Ellen shrugs "It just feels.... weird... and what's even more weird is that when Gus was describing it, it almost sounded familiar although I have no idea why it would sound familiar to me." "I understand that déja-vu sensations are common in amnesia cases. Sort of like a motor memory in your muscles, or a pallette memory for a taste." Wilson says, calmly. The doctor was nodding in agreement. "What kind of work have you been doing?"
"Also, You mentioned you're learning to ride horses. Was it Edeline? Gus had said she was a rather patient horse. This far out at Land's End, though, they tend to be skittish. It took a while even for Betheny to warm up to me. It must have been intimidating when you and them first met." Wilson asks, souding like he's running through a check list of ways to identify who she is with what little they have.

Mary Ellen shakes hear head at Wilson as she replies "Goodwyn was pretty nervous around me at first, but after a minute or two she seemed to calm down and then she kind of bowed to me. Betheny was a little nervous at first, but not nearly as much as Goodwyn and she did the same thing, which Edeline thought was weird because no one had taught her how to do that because she's a riding horse and not a show horse." After a minute, she adds "I mostly have been helping with the bailing of hay." (tag)

"The bailing of hay? Sounds rewarding." Wilson says. "I had the same problem with the horses. Being a city-boy myself I never knew there was a way even to approach them. But, they'll all warm up to you, I'm sure."
Folding up the note book, he pulls out a small device, about the size of a cell-phone, or a woman's leg shaver, if you watch the Phatom Plot Device. "It's a DNA collector." He says, opening it. "You put your thumb on the dark square. It will take your thumb print. Then, you place your finger - I recommend the pinky - on this white square. It'll take a small sample of blood cells for DNA. We use these a lot, since missing persons cases often are tracked through DNA evidence, and not just prints." Holding out the device, he says, "Whenever you're ready."

Mary Ellen studies the DNA collector curiously as Wilson describes how you use it. Putting her pinky on the white square as Wilson had instructed, Mary Ellen asks "How long does it take to find out the results?" (tag)

"Unfortunately." Says Wilson, "it may take some time. But, when we know, we'll get back to you." Rising, he says, "Thank-you for your time, Mary-Ellen. I'll be in touch." Nodding to Gus and Edeline, he heads out.
"Oh! He's sooo. smart." Says Edeline as the doctor walked out. "He knows everything about policing. Daddy says he was a big lootennant in the city." Edeline failed to duck a pat on the head from Gus as he walked out of the parlour as well. Recovering from the scowl, Edeline says, "Well, we're done for the day. Want to do more horse riding?"

Mary Ellen looks a little disappointed as she nods at Wilson "Ok. Hopefully we'll find out soon." She smiles at Edeline and nods "That would be nice. I like horse back riding." (tag)

Eventually, pair are at the stable, saddling their horses and, with them Gus sent out one of the guides, a youngish human cowboy/ranch type by the name of Amos. If there could be a dream-boat rancher (PB: 19, perfectly unkempt), it would be Amos. Tall enough that his broad shoulders look perfectly proportioned. Even his full-length duster didn't seem to mind to be worn by him. His light-brown curling hair tied back and out of the way.
Edeline appeared to share Cola and Alicia's opinion of him, since she couldn't keep her eyes of Amos. And every time he'ld turn to check on them, she'ld smile bigly.
"OK. Ground rules." Amos said, as he prepped his horse, Charger, in the stable. "Betheny I have no problems with, but Eddy, you let Goodwyn get ahead of us, and you'll be trotting straight home, clear? And Mary-Ellen, Gus explained about animals and how you're not allowed near the herds so I - Charger!" Charger, seeing Mary-Ellen, snuffed her then did the bowing thing, too. "Charger, git up. up!" After a second, the horse rose and snorted discontented for a second at Amos. "There, calm down. Just, don't do that on the range boy." Out of the corner of his eye, Amos was watching Mary-Ellen, clearly curious.

Mary Ellen shrugs at Amos and says "I don't know why horses do that. Both Betheny and Goodwyn did that too when they first met me. I asked Gus, but he didn't know why they do that either. Any ideas?" Mary Ellen gets up onto Betheny and gets ready to go riding. (tag)

Amos shakes his head. "No clue. Come on Eddy, Daylight's wasting." Something about losing sunlight sent a chill down Mary-Ellen's spine.
Edeline hopped into Goodwyn and strutted up next to Mary-Ellen. "He's so brave and honest to admit he doesn't know." She sighs. "He knows so much though."
Out on the range, the colours of the sun as it approached the mists of lands end were quite spectacular. "Bet you never get that in the city." Says Edeline. "Oh, sorry. Forgot, you don't know. I remember Lt Wilson, though. He just stared, like he was a statue, first time he saw it."

Mary Ellen smiles and teases "I think you like Lt. Wilson" As she sees the colours of the sun, she stops and smiles at it. "It is really pretty. You're probably right though, people in the city probably don't see something so pretty." She tries not to show the nervousness she is starting to feel as the sun starts to set and looks around for any signs of something out of the ordinary. (tag)

"I do not!" Edeline protests. Glancing at Amos as he turns. "Really I don't. He's just really smart and knows police things and stuff Momma doesn't let me watch on the Vids." She pouts at Mary-Ellen.
"Oh, cheer up, Eddy." Says Amos turning back to ride with them. "You really are too easy to tease."
"I know." Eddy pouts. "It's just dumb. Just cause I'm a girl, I'm supposed to chase boys or something stupid, like Cola."
While those two are talking, Mary-Ellen hears something rustle in the woods.

Mary Ellen smiles softly at Edeline and says "Being a girl doesn't mean you have to chase boys if you don't want to. Just that you can. You can do anything you want to."
Hearing something rustling in the woods, she interrupts Edeline and Amos's conversation and says quietly "I think we need to head back to the ranch now." (tag)

Even as Mary-Ellen spoke, the horses changed their formation before the humans could pilot it. Edeline didn't notice, but Amos had. He was now between the forest and Mary-Ellen, and Edeline was furthest away.
Charger, though, seemed reluctant to go any further without Betheny's rider, despite Amos's urging.
"OK. Everyone back slowly away." Amos said. Edeline didn't need to be told twice. She was already frightened, and urging Goodwyn away.
Amos pulled a rifle out, pointing it at the noise. "No foolin' around." He calls into the woods. "Show yourselves."
