Amos turned and pulled a utily shovel and started digging a hole for Ranger.
"I'm OK. Ranger was a good dog. He played a lot with me and Cola and Alicia when we were young." Edeline explained. "He never let us get hurt... then he ran away a few weeks ago... I thought it was a Mysterious Magical Ruslters, cause they started about the same time." She wipes her nose. "At least they didn't kill him."
Amos picks Ranger up. Though, as he does, Mary-Ellen notices a pair of puncture marks around the dog's neck.

Mary Ellen nods sympathetically at Edeline and says "Yeah, I'm glad they didn't." Seeing the pair of puncture marks, she looks at them curiously, wondering what would have caused that and why anyone would hurt a dog like that. (tag)

Edeline and Amos quickly bury Ranger. "We need to get back to the house." He says, calmly, but firmly.
Edeline looks around "Oh! It's so late. Daddy's gonna be so mad I'm out late." And she hops on Goodwyn quickly.
The trio make their way back to the house, but Amos didn't relax until they had crossed one of the creeks between the house they had passed on the way out.

Mary Ellen rides Goodwyn back to the ranch, lost in her own thoughts. When the cross one of the creeks, she peers down at it wondering why Amos didn't relax until they'd crossed it. Wondering what kind of creatures are stopped by a creek, she continues on toward the ranch, staring at Amos a lot, trying to figure out what he is. (tag)

Edeline looks over at Mary-Ellen with a "He's mine, don't touch" kind of look when young girl catches her staring.
At the ranch, Gus and Dora are waiting for the trio near the horse stables. Edeline could barely wait to hop off. "Momma! It was horrible!" He cried, running for hugs.

Mary Ellen smiles and shakes her head at Edeline, trying to indicate that she has no interest in stealing Edy's boyfriend away from her.
When they return to the stables, she dismounts from Betheny and leads her into the stable quietly. (tag)

Gus watched Mary-Ellen calmly as she walked into the stables, seemingly hoping to glance first hand what Edeline had been talking about with the horses. Though, something Amos had said evidently had caught him off guard, returning his concentration to the conversation at hand.
The horses all withdrew from the stable doors, as usual, but weren't causing a rucus. Betheny was walking rather proudly amongst them.
As she was working to put Betheny away, Mary-Ellen's vision blurred to a scene within the forest where Ranger died. And people moving in it in the night. Please child. Wake up. They need you. As her vision cleared, she was on the ground, Betheny was nuzzling her, the horses were all whinneying and Gus was tearing in.

Mary Ellen feels puzzled, wondering what Amos had said to Gus to have him watching her like that as she entered the stable.
As her vision cleared, Mary Ellen's first thought was 'What the hell? Now I'm having these dreams during the day when I'm awake?' Feeling a little woozy, she gets up slowly and tries to reassure Gus "I'm ok." she says "I just felt weird for a minute there." As she leads Betheny back into her stable, she wonders who it was that needed her, and what they needed her for. (tag)

Gus clearly didn't believe her. But didn't seem to want to press the matter. "You probably just had a long day, I suspect - Betheny. It's OK." He said, Betheny having put her head between them. Taking a calming breath, he says, "OK, well, get her put away and Amos, help me get these others in good order!" He says, the tall cowboy coming in, watching Mary-Ellen as he went.

Mary Ellen nods quietly, feeling uneasy by the way Gus seemed to be acting weird around her and the way Amos kept staring at her as if she had an invisible head that only they could see. Heading out of the stable, she heads back into the house and gets herself a drink of water and sits down, wishing she understood what was going on and who she was. (tag)

Edeline poked her head in. "Hi, are you OK?" She asks. "Did Ranger scare you? He scared me. He used to be so nice a dog." She says. "Do you know what I used to do to jog my memory... I have have a card game, see?" She pulls out a brightly-coloured old box of cards. "Want to try it?"

Mary Ellen nods with a quiet smile. "I'm ok." she replies. "It was kind of scary." she says to Edeline, before taking a sip of water. Seeing the cards, she nods. "Sure, we can try them." (tag)

Mary-Ellen and Edeline cleared off the living room table and set to the game. The game, called Flip-Side on the box, was a sort of variant of the classic Memory game, but with a Simon-Says variant (remember those coloured singing button machines where you had to repeat the cycle in order? That, only with cards). It involved placing words and images in a given order, after being shown once and the cards then shuffled and flipped over.
At some point, Amos had entered the room to read a book. Edeline's demeanour became a little more agressive and showy despite herself. But that only increased the focus Mary-Ellen needed.
The game had gone for a few hours, and Edeline didn't seem to want to let up. She kept looking like she wanted to break the tie. Note, though, points haven't been tallied.
Eventually, as Mary-Ellen was putting together a seemingly random sequence of words, something in the back of her mind coalesced into a thought:
Were-Jaguars: (n) (race) Were-Jaguars are a sentient magical creature. They are nearly invulnerable, except for the use of silver and some magic weapons and are one of the few races that can battle Vampires in hand-to-hand combat. Often lives alone, but is the most able of the Were-beasts to live in societal setting...
"We're... Jag... you... are... what? You are what?" Edeline says. "Oh, look. And you've got them messed up from the right order. You were on a roll, too."
Amos had stopped reading his book. "Does this mean Eddy's won and I can have quiet?"
Edeline stuck her tongue out at Amos. "Serves you right for listening in on the game. So what if Harumphadinks don't exist. I still like the word."

Mary Ellen looks at the messed up cards and shakes her head with a small smile. "Sorry." she says "I guess that means you win, Edeline. Good job." As Edeline mispronounces the word, she automatically says "Were-Jaguar. It's a magical creature." She can't help but look over at Amos and think 'So, is that what he is? Why would I know about a creature like that?' (tag)

"Oh! Magical creatures? I know about those, too. Like faeries and stuff. But a were-jaguar..." Edeline pauses looking at the cards trying to get the sylables. "Those don't sound friendly."
Amos stares back at Mary-Ellen, with a rather un-telling stare. If he knew, he wasn't letting on. "Those are all just myths. Magical creatures don't exist."
"But magic exists." Edeline says. "They have it in the city! They have guys who can shoot fire and can appear and disappear. I hear that Zachary can even stop monsters with his magic and does it all the time, like a super-hero."
Amos shrugs. "Ever since you saw that vid..." he says, dismissively.
"You believe me, right Mary-Ellen?" Edeline asks plaintively.
