"Yeah, you can watch it." Says Alicia. "Just remember that Cola has first dibs him."
Cola giggles. "He is so mine."
"Yeah." Says Edeline, clueing in. "She wants to marry him and have millions of little babies." She says. "All called Gus." She adds, Gus being made to sound like a most inappropriate name in any circumstance.
"Quiet you." Says Cola, "Or we'll tell our new friend about Jimmy."
"You wouldn't dare!" Says Edeline, flustered... then confused as a towel landed over he head.
"Cool down, kiddo, she's just teasing." Says Alicia as she pulls her arm back. "The Guild is some kind of government organization or something. They're tasked with magic enforcement, like keeping them in check. It's all very political, I guess. The police are trying to take it over from them, I think. This guy, Counsellor Vas, wants it to be with the city instead of someone else."

Mary Ellen nods at Alicia. "It does sound very political." Pausing for a second, she asks "Magic enforcement, huh? I wonder why the police would want to take it over." Smiling at Edeline, she asks "if they were all name Gus, how would she be able to tell them all apart?"
She considers asking Edeline about Jimmy, but figures it would just embarrass her, so she doesn't. Finishing off the porridge, she gets up and washes her bowl and spoon and puts it in the rack. Sitting back down at the table, she sips her juice, wondering if there was anything she should be doing or could do to help out.

"That's the thing." says Alicia. "Aunt Dora thinks the Guild pulled out this Decree Slayer business so they can hold onto power. They're supposed to be a traditional royal guard that are independent from the city government... all very historical."
"You'ld only need to tell them apart if they're in trouble." Explains Edeline. "And I never met a Gus that wasn't trouble."
"I did." Says Cola, grinning. "Oh, thanks!" She says, as Mary-Ellen washes her dishes. "You didn't need to do that."
"Actually." Says Dora, putting her hands on Edeline's shoulders. "I think, to keep you both out of trouble, Eddy" (Edeline futily squrims at the use of her knickname)"should give you a tour of the farm. You won't be able to work for a few days until you get your strength up, but it'll be good to find a place for you... Did you get a name yet?"
"It's Mary Ellen" Says Edeline. "I can do that. I know everything about the farm." She explains, grinning proudly.

Mary Ellen smile at Cola "It's no problem," she replies "I just want to help out when I can to thank Dora for taking care of me when I was hurt." Listening to the story about the Guild, she nods "It sounds kind of interesting. Maybe I can read up on it if there's a library nearby."
Grinning at Edeline, Mary Ellen says "That sounds great. I'm sure you'll be able to answer any questions I have about the farm then."

"Sorry. No library, except for the books in the study." Says Cola. "But we have the TV."
"Yep! Oh, and you can meet Goodwyn!" Says Edeline pulling Mary-Ellen out to the front door. Once there, Edeline finds some suitable shoes (they're old track shoes Cola had abandonned), and then put her own on. Then, took her outside.

Mary Ellen finds Edeiline's enthusiasm to be catching as she follows her with a grin. "I look forward to meeting her." she replies. As she is pulled by Edeline, she listens as Edeline explains how things work and asks questions when she thinks of them.

Edeline does seem quite apt in knowing the goings on at the farm. Well, more a ranch. There were some fields kept for subsistence crops, but property was taken up with sheep, cattle and poultry activities. It was, for the most aprt humanely opperated. Edeline avoided the avatoire.
At last, she came to the final stable. There were a number of horses there, and Goodwyn was in her own stall as the pair come in. About the same time Mary Ellen entered stable, the horses in their stalls started to whinny as if startled. "Oh no! Quiet! Shh! It's OK!" Said the little 8-yr old, trying to calm the horses individually... "oh... this is no good..." She says, usherring Mary-Ellen out after a moment. Once she was outside, the horses start to calm down.
"They mustn't like strangers or something. We don't get many and we have another stable for ones that ride in... keeps horses from getting sick." She explains. "Wait here, I'll get Goodwyn."
After a moment, Edeline arrives with a horse in tow substantially taller than her. As Edeline brought Goodwyn closer, the horse paused and huffed a little. "it's OK." Says Edeline, patting Goodwyn's nose. "She's a nice person. See?" reaching for Mary-Ellen's hand, she pulls her closer, and puts her hand gently on Goodwyn's snout. "see? Nice?" After a moment, the horse calmed down.
Then, it stepped forward, nuzzling Mary, and pretty much kneeling to bow to her. "Now, that I've never seen a horse do that wasn't told." Says Edeline.

Mary Ellen looks surprised as the horse pretty much kneels to bow to her. Patting the horse lightly, she asks Edeline in a calm tone of voice "What does it mean when a horse does this?" As she waits for the girl to answer, she coos to the horse "You're a very pretty horse" In the back of her mind, she wonders why the horses had reacted the way they had when she had gone into the stable and if it was really because she was a stranger like Edeline had suggested or if it was something else.

"I... I think she wants to be your friend. Usually they do that at shows, you know, are they tame or not. But it's weird. When horses are startled, they want to bolt, not be tamed. Maybe she knows you're sick and feels bad for being scared earlier." Edline says after a long moment of thought. "Horses are kinda smart that way."
After a minute, she says "hup." And Goodwyn gets to her feet, nuzzling Edeline. "Did you want to try this with another horse? Maybe we can find you one to ride for later."

Looking thoughtful, Mary Ellen nods. "Maybe that's it. Or she realized I wasn't a bad person and is just shy." Shrugging a little, she says "I really don't know much about horses."
Mary Ellen smiles at Edeline and says "I'd love to ride Goodwyn, if that's ok with you. She is your horse after all." Patting the horse, she adds "And if it's ok with Goodwyn. It doesn't have to be right now though, we can wait til later."

"Ohh, no. Goodwyn's tamed, but she's too energetic for a first-timer. There's a mare my mom likes, Betheny, that would be better. She's a bit older, and knows how to go for new riders. I'll go get her."
Edeline walked Goodwyn into the stables, and, after a few moments, walked out with a different horse. it was obviously older, and greyer, but looked to be well-fed and strong enough to carry someone the size of Dora.
"OK. We'll try this again." Says Edeline, rather scientifically. Betheny wasn't as startled as Goodwyn, but did resist a little before walking forward, nuzzling and sniffing Mary Ellen then also kneeling for a second before rising. "Wow." Says Edeline. "No-one taught that to Betheny." She explains, petting the mare's muzzle, "This is a riding horse, not a show horse. And a good one!" She finishes, consoling Betheny's snort.

Mary Ellen can't hide the look of surprise on her face as Betheny does the same thing as Goodwyn and kneels in front of her for a second. 'That's so weird. Why do they keep doing that? she wonders to herself. Smiling quietly, she pats the horse as she says to Edeline "And a very smart horse." She then asks "So, what do I need to do first?"

"You need a saddle." Says Edeline. "And mom's permission. She doesn't like me riding with her knowing. And the saddles are at the house anyways." She explains as she walks Betheny back into the barn.
After a second, she comes out. "There, all safe and. sound." He face soon grows into an expectant smile. "So, what do you think?"

Mary Ellen hides her disappointment and smiles quietly at Edeline. "They seem like nice horses. I look forward to trying to ride them when I get a chance." As they walk back toward the house, she adds "It's very nice here. Very peaceful."

Edeline looks around the bustling farm. "Are we in the same place?" She asks innocently.
Just as she does, the lunch bell rings. "Oh! Lunch! I can't wait." Says Edeline, pulling Mary-Ellen by the hand to the house.
