Jane smiles and says "Well, we don't like to have the same name to be like sisters." Thinking about her suggestions, Jane shakes her head "I don't think Deliliah fits me. Mary Ellen might be nice though. People can call me Mary. What do you think?" (tag)

"Mary-Ellen." Edeline repeats. "No knicknames. They call me Eddy on the ranch. I don't like knicknames."

Smiling Mary Ellen nods "That sounds fine to me." Inwardly, she seems to think that doesn't feel like her real name, but it sounds pretty enough, and she could be wrong. "So, what do you like to do for fun?" (tag)

"I like riding Goodwyn, and playing with the dogs and running around. Plus, there are a couple of other kids on the ranch and we all hang out together." Edeline says. "Oh, and climbing trees. But, you're not allowed any of those. Not until Momma says you can go outside."

Mary Ellen nods and replies "Not until I am feeling better." Smiling, she adds "But that sounds like fun. Maybe if Goodwyn likes me, I could ride her too. What do you think?" A stray thought enters the back of her mind 'It would be nice to have a sister' and Mary Ellen mentally frowns, wondering where that came from and if that meant she only had brothers and no sisters. "Maybe." Says Edeline. "But, it's time for my bedtime. I'll see you tomorrow!" And, with a smile, runs out of the room.
After Dora had seen to her, Mary-Ellen dropped off to sleep. "Awake, child. Awake to who you are. You must not hide form it." Says the dream, ending a bright blue flash and the sun shining on her face.

Mary Ellen smiles at Edeline and says "Good night." Putting her cup of water on the bed side table, she goes to sleep. When she wakes up, she stares out the window quietly, trying to understand what the dream was trying to tell her. 'I must not hide from what? Who am I' she wonders to herself. Sitting up, she drinks the rest of the water and then gets up carefully and goes over to the window and looks outside, and looks around at the property to see what it looks like. (tag)

As Mary-Ellen opens the curtains, the dawn light flashes into her room, rising above the cloudy mists at Land's End - which are still quite distant. As far as the eye can see, the grounds are fairly flat with a few rolling, forested hills. Among the smooth grasslands of early spring (if I never mentioned a season, I'm mentioning it now), new grass is growing and leaves are budding, all fresh, green and dewy in the light. Herd cattles of various co-mingling species are seen being herded in the distance by cowboys on horses. Edeline is nearer, working with some sheep. Nearer to the house are barns of various kinds, and, if there ever was a yard on this side of the house, it has been trampled by ages of horses, cattle, other mounts and land vehicles.
"Sometimes I wish I could look on it with eyes as fresh as yours." Says Dora, walking into the room. "Glad to see you on your feet."
Stepping to the window she looks out, mostly watching Edeline battle the will of the sheep. "We've had to work a lot harder in the last year, ever since the Cooper farm caved. Such a terrible business, it was, too."
She shakes her head. "But, enough of that. I've found some clothes that ought to fit you. And your tiny frame." Dora's jealousy leaked in a bit, as she had the proper farmer's frame: built to survive the rigours of rural life, and not as petit and firm as Mary-Ellen's. "You must have worked out in your past life." She put some clean denim overalls and a cotton shirt on the bed. "We'll get you some delicates for the next shipment, so be careful with the ones you're wearing, dear. Breakfast is simmering for you. Porridge for an empty stomach. See you in a few minutes." With that, she heads out of the room and back to the lower level of the house.

Admiring the beauty of the surroundings, Mary Ellen smiles and thinks that it'd be nice to live on a farm, even if it was hard work. Listening to Dora, she wonders offhand what had happened to the Coopers that had caused their farm to cave, and is about to ask but gets the impression Dora doesn't like to talk about it, so she doesn't.
Taking the clothes, she says "Thank you Dora, for everything you've done for me." Once Dora heads out, she gets changed into the cotton shirt and the overalls and heads to the lower level of the house slowly, looking around at her surroundings as she does. Once she finds the bathroom, she uses it and makes sure to wash and dry her hands before going in search of the kitchen. (tag)

The house was fairly large, with easily 10 bedrooms on the second floor. Finding washrooms was not too much of a problem as most people had already set out to work outside.
Finding the kitchen was equally easy, as it was also a fairly large room, with some distinct smells to it. The house itself was fairly clean, but looked old and rustic under the paint. The floors were all planked hardwood, and the varnish had long faded in the more travelled areas. The walls had dozens of family pictures, awards and paintings, and a few china hutches lined the downstairs hall.
Inside the kitchen, Dora was bustling, already cooking lunch with a couple of other young women, who were younger than Mary-Ellen, but clearly too old to be Dora's kids.
As she entered the kitchen, Dora turned. "Oh Good." Dora says. "You found the kitchen. I don't know why I worry, everyone seems to end up here."
As Dora put the put the bowl of bland-looking porridge down with some juice, Edeline came in the kitchen door. "I hate sheep!" She pronounced.
Dora whirled. "Front door, with those boots on!"
With a look that could kill, Edeline went back outside. A moment later, she reappeared through the central hallway, bootless, and sat on a chair next to Mary-Ellen. "I hate sheep." She said again with a well-formed pout. "Don't know why Daddy makes me hustle'em."

Mary Ellen smiles at Dora as she puts down the porrige and juice and says "Thank you." Smiling politely, though a bit shyly at the other women with Dora, she says "Hi there." Taking a sip of the juice, she takes a bite of the oatmeal, and hides the face she makes as it is just as bland as it looks. Realizing she probably hadn't eaten anything for days, she makes herself eat it so she can keep up her strength. She smiles sympathetically at Edeline and says "Well, maybe when I'm better, I can help you." (tag)

"I'ld rather not do with them all." Edline says, still pouting. "They're so dumb. They don't do what you tell them, they're that dumb."
"Well, how do you expect to handle the larger herds if you can't handle the sheep, Eddy?" Asked one of the girls, putting a juice in front of her. "Plus, this new friend of ours might be able to get you some pointers." With a smile Mary-Ellen, sh says "My name is Alicia. That's my sister Cola. We're Dora's nieces."

Mary Ellen nods sympathetically at Edeline and replies with a small smile. "I guess they're like boys, huh? They never listen either." Looking a bit surprised, she shakes her head at Alicia and says "Oh, I wouldn't know what to do, but I could try." (tag)

"Oh! Speaking of boys! Did you see that press-conference vid, yet?" Says Cola, putting a dish down and looking out a window. "That boy is such a dream-boat."
Alicia swoons a bit. "I know... and he's a Cooper too... Didn't see that one coming."
"I'm not suprised." Says Dora sharply. "Did you see what happened to that hotel he was involved in?" She clucks her tongue. "You're better off without. All this Decree Slayer non-sense... They've been extinct for a hundred years. It's Guild is what it is. They shouldn't have put that poor boy in that position. He's been through enough." Shaking her head, she walks out of the kitchen.
"I could put him through a little more." Cola coos, picking the dishes up.
"Stop!" Says Alicia. "Not in front of the kids." With a wink at Mery-Ellen, she gets back to work.
"A little more what?" Asks Edline. "Cola? A little more what?"

Mary Ellen just looks confused at this point. "Decree Slayer? What happened at the hotel? Is this Cooper guy the same guy who owned the farm that you told me caved, Dora?" Seeing that Dora has left the kitchen, she turns to Alicia and asks "Will someone give me a little background info? What's the Guild? Can I see the press conference vid?" (tag)
