"Oh,, never thought of that." McKenna replied sheepishly, realizing how bad her understanding of ship operations really was. As the captain issued his directions, she merely nodded in response, trying not to show her disappointment at being sent away like a child from the adult's conversation. She kept a constant running inventory of the medical supplies and already knew they were lower than she wanted to be, so decided to head to the galley to start there.

"Captain, we may not be completely unable to affect its course..if we can get ahead of it and match speed pulling it at the right over at the right angle in smaller increments instead of a large pull. just might be possible to use its own forward momentum to help us and reduce hull stress. it would still be risky, but should be doable and far safer. We alter it enough to use the earth's atmosphere to break it up as it skips across. It would be far preferable to a possible direct hit like it is going to now." he added as he radioed the bridge as looked at the damage ponder just what kind stress the ship could take.

Flip stairs at the comms screen as he turns off his mic. "Stand by? Did he say standby," he asks no one in particular. "Giant rock headed for earth, thanks for telling us, but stand by while we check in with all our politicians and see if anyone can pull their head out of their ass long enough to come up with a solution," he mutters.
He says, "well captain, earth says to stand by, so what do you want to do?"

"Thank-you Mensk," Tawfeek answered on the comm.
"We stand by," Tawfeek answered.
He didn't say anything else until the door closed, especially given the report from Mensk.
"It's not the solution that worries me," the Captain sighed. "It's the rescue ship. Regardless of what happens, it's who's coming to get us after we save the world. We will have to be ready to float for a while, after this is done."
Galley
Since everyone was asleep when it happened, the Galley had been tidied. Thankfully, it was not much of a mess after the impact. Through the front viewport, she could see the distant hunk of rock.
Outside
"Thank-you Mensk," Tawfeek answered on the comm.
"We should head in," Jessica said. "No sense being outside too long."

"If the earth gets wiped out, not much sense to anything. But your right, these suits will run out of air." he responded with a nod, then started in. He was wondering why he should bother trying since the captain already seemed to have decided for the crew. His motive was probably to keep them safe but the cost was a big one. especially if that rock hit a reactor, volcano or the center of ocean. He did understand. A piece of advice he was once told before he joined up with the space crews reminded him.
"A ship at sea is its own world. To be the captain of a ship is to be the unquestioned ruler of that world and requires all of the leadership skills of a prince or minister. —Colonel Corazon Santiago, “Leadership and the Sea” he said aloud as he went to the airlock.

With a glance at the rock they were chasing, McKenna sighed before starting to go through the food stores to see what they had. She was still miffed that she was nothing more than the help or a passenger than crew much of the time, and could not understand why she stayed on board. But the more she thought on it, the more she knew the reason and soon she was going to have to do something about it.

Flip shakes his head, "you mean if someone is coming to get us. If you want my opinion, and you didn't ask, but here it is, the only way we can guarantee that anyone would even care about us is if we make sure that everyone within radio range knows what we are about to try to do. Otherwise control can just get us to save the planet and pretend we don't exist. I'm sure no one at IBM is going to make a case for us since it would mean admitting they screwed up."
He turns from the controls as the ship is pretty much set on the slow lumbering course of the big rock now. Looking at the captain he says, "We could be stuck out here for a while Captain. It could make the trip to Saturn look like a quick trip around the block."
He pauses and glances back at the rock then back at the Captain, "I'm wondering though, you know the Doctor keeps good records, so why not tell her you wanted the room instead of sending her to recount the stores?"

"Of the medical stores, but food is more fluid," Tawfeek said. "Plus, she could sit here and obsess about it, or be busy."
He sat in the chair opposite to Foreman.
"We have a black box audio recording, plus whatever sensor readings, and the call to control," he said. "We're as documented as we can be. The problem isn't about whether or not we become heroes to Earth. The problem is that McKenna's suggestion is the only practical one. Except that, instead of resting on top, we would have to go bow-to-rock. With a ship that has a frame fracture."
Airlock "He's working it through, already," Jessica said. "We just need an unkown variable. Let's also double-check the fuel cells."
Galley
Even a quick look around the cabinets showed they had a few months of food left - Tawfeek had stocked up at Saturn and again at the Belt Weigh Station.
Bridge
Tawfeek looked out across the bow suddenly, as if something caught his eye.

Even if they do the land on the astroid trick." he paused, "I may as a well let the real heroes do there job. After all I'm just here to fix the engines, right?" He grinned then went to check the cells were up to the task. "Besides Superman wasn't engineer So I might smart to join Tarzan in the Jungle." he chuckled.

Flip listens to the captain and says nothing. They could be stuck out here for months. He thinks 'I wonder if I will finally have time alone with MJ. Something always seems to be in the way of us.'[/b]
"Well we go for it, risk ourselves, or just let earth fend for itself. I say we do what we can," Flip says to the Captain.
He follows the Captain's gaze out the viewport, "see something out there?"

Finished going through the cupboards, McKenna scowled because it only proved her point. The stores were well stocked with plenty of food. Sputtering about it, she decided to go to hydroponics and see if she could harvest anything before the captain had Flip do whatever they had planned and she did not need to know.

(rolls Carried over) "I'm getting daft in my old age..." he said as he looked at a fuel cell. tapping a comm he grinned.
"Captain, I believe I have the solution. We can use both ideas in a single plan. One of the reasons we can get a cable on the asteroid is because it is spinning. we land on it use the thrusters to stop the spin then put the Tethering cables on it. That should allow us to guide out the trajectory to hit earth by pulling in smaller increments. That way the forward momentum will do the work us."

Engine sections
Walking over to his favourite nacelle, Mensk saw into the cargo hold where some of the loose items were drawn to the air leak.
Mensk found engineering just as he had left it. Though, there were a few new warning lights
Hydroponics and airlock area
As she harumphed towards hrydoponics, McKenna spotted Jessica putting the suits away.
"What's wrong?" Jessica asked.
On the Bridge
Tawfeek looked at his screen, then back up.
"Do a active radar sweep," he said. "I think I see a another ship."
His tone was not particularly excited.
"Thanks Mensk," Tawfeek said, quickly on the comms. "Let me know how much fuel and air we have left, please."

McKenna was surprised when Jessica spoke to her, caught off guard by anyone else not being on the bridge. " Nothing. Everything.." She groaned. When the captain interrupted over the PA, she turned it off. "Him, treating me like a little kid and sending me off his bridge to do busy work instead of letting me know what is going on. Sometime I need you to tell me exactly why I stay on board. I'll be in hydroponics trying to salvage whatever is ready to harvest. You should probably be up on his bridge helping save the day." She turned and continued on to hydroponics. When she arrived, she again turn off the intercom so she wouldn't have to listen to Mengsk and the captain and could try to calm down with some peace and quiet.

"Well that is the last time I give advice.." once off radio he muttered. Checking the fuel gauge and other vitals was easy enough. The need to manually check levels might be necessary. But then again what did he expect Engineers were like drummers if they had a thought it shocking. These people also seemed to get the impression he bashing other ideas.
Fact he wasn't bashing the concept of using thrusters like that. He just felt both ideas together would work better. Guiding it while sitting on it would likely cause it only to spin and even if they did change angle it would be largely uncontrolled changes. The idea of pulling from front used the asteroids already existing movement and not have create acceleration to move it. That momentum would remain if the change in trajectory was small and gradual. and when dealing with travel in space small and gradual had a habit of making big effects.
After a reading that showed numbers that did not fit and a gauge that was a bit sticky he did get clean reading and sent the numbers to bridge and the captain.
