"It could be a weapon or pure bad luck depending on how you spin it." he paused, "It would look like a natural event. Though it makes no sense to disrupt the only planet in our system able to support life reliably. Regardless it should be diverted if it is going to hit earth. Even hitting water it will cause immense damage."
"Depending on size it may be able to catch it or alter course." Mensk added with a nod unless we have a harpoon or grapple system to snag and pull it slowly enough to not pull out the harpoon...." he concurred with the pilot. Checking the ships systems and what was available he had two working plans.
"I have a few ideas. One is use the ships engines to break it up and two if they had that net or a harpoon type systems to divert by pulling it off course. A third albeit more dangerous nudge it off course with the ship or something explosive. If we can't get it angled right the earth's atmosphere should break it more effectively at least." he looked at his math and what the ship might be able to do.

As Foreman got a little closer, the size of the rock became more apparent.
"It would snap the tethers, if the mass readings are right," Tawfeek answered. "And, it's an accident. Or,it had better be. Acts of war seem to be excluded from my coverage."
"Vessel Galaxy, This is Inner-Belt Ming Station," The radio said. "We have you on our scopes. This fragment is not salvage, it is the property of IBM. Do you copy?"
Tawfeek keyed to open comm to answer.
"IBM, this is Galaxy, Captain Tawfeek speaking," He said. "You will be pleased to know that we are only interested in IBMs reparations to my hull."
"IBM has done no damage," The radio answered.
Tawfeek looked at Jessica.
"Then the explosion that sent us off course was not your responsibility? Does that mean this fragment was not set free from your operations? Answer carefully, now."
There was a pause, if only a short one.
"Vessel Galaxy," the voice said at last, by the resigned tone, it was someone who hated making the decision. "You have us. Catelogue legitmate damages for claim. We will ensure a review. Once again, that fragment is ours."
"We understand," Tawfeek answered, and keyed off the com. He looked at Jessica. "Well?"
Jessica nodded, "Maintain course and heading," she said to Foreman. "Mensk, let's go examine the damage."

"So much for that excitement.." he shrugged and and followed, Lets snag an EVA suit before we go in case of breach or rad leak." he nodded and followed. His concern chiefly one of something minor that may chain react or damage to the ships infrastructure.

"Captain?" McKenna questioned, not understanding," What are we doing? You think that IBM shot that rock at Earth? Why would they do that?"

Flip shakes his head, "this makes no sense Captain. If it's their rock, and they did it, they can track trajectory just like we can, and they can see where this is going, so why are we the closest ship to it and why aren't they trying to stop it? And if they did it on purpose, and have no intention of stopping it, are just going to follow it all the way, or are we going to do something to stop them," Flip asks.
He knew they were a cargo ship, but he was once military and regardless of that fact he was human and if this thing hit earth, alot of people would die.

Outside the ship
Both Jessica and Mensk were outside the ship, walking along for a visual inspection of the hull. In some ways, it made a little sense: why accidentally stumble on the leak when they could find it outside, first.
As the pair walked, Mensk could easily see the dent on the rear starboard. It looked like something had taken a cosmic baseball bat and took a single solid whack at the corner.
On the bridge
"It was an accident," Tawfeek said. "Or they would not have claimed the fragment. Or agreed to recoup our costs."
He zoomed out on the holotable map, for a better context. They could see the pips of ships, and the larger orbital bodies.
"We're here," he said, pointing. "The fragment is here. And there was no other ship in the right place, heading in the right direction."
He scrolled the map towards mars, with the fragment's path.
[Dunn dun duunnnnn!]"Once the fragment passes Mars, we're pretty much at the point of no return," He said. "After that, it would take the mass and engines of a super cruise to force it out of the way. Good luck getting a country to commit that."[/Dunn dun duunnnnn!]
"As to why we're still here," he said. "well, I expect we have deviated enough for the space flight administration to notice."
"Vessel Galaxy, you have deviated from your scheduled course," The SFA announced on the comm. "What is your situation?"
"Foreman, answer, if you please," Tawfeek said. "McKenna, check who owns I-BM, please."

"We could find leaks from inside so why send us outside?" he thought. Looking at the dent He's up to something. Better keep a sharp eye open and watch my back. Mengsk knew he be in for a long day and looked for any hint of items attached and kept an eye on space around him to spot certain items sensors could not..
"Jess I have a nice sized dent here. It looks like a single hit too. Shall we see what it has to tell us?" he grinned her. looking about for activity around the Galaxay

McKenna nodded, and accessed the computer system, and began searching for both Inner Belt Mining and IBM. "Captain, do you really think we can catch that rock?"

Flip glances at the Captain, not totally sure of what he has in mind. He toggles the comms and reaches out to SFA. "This is the vessel Galaxy we have changed course to track a... uh... large rock that split off from an Inner Belt Mining Operation. We were hit with a shock wave from the explosion that created this boulder," he says on the comms.

Bridge
"Galaxy, I didn't quite copy," the radio fella said. "Could you repeat that, please?"
Tawfeek walked over to McKenna to see what her work brought up.
"Oh sure. We could land on it in a heartbeat." He said. "It's re-directing it that would be the problem."
Outside
Mensk didn't see anything but twinkles and the big rock in front of them.
Jessica nodded, as they walked over. "Well, well."
She tried to peer into the buckle. "Here, you look. I'll point the light."

"A nice dent," he pondered, "Lets see if there is anything stuck to us that might be helpful. He sent us here for some reason." Mengsk grumbled considering why or even what reasoning for a cover up. Probably linked to the Dominion of humanity and other such political nonsense.
"With any luck will have a trace of that rock..at least it will give me something to collect." He looked for other spacecraft, probes then back to the dent.

"this might be crazy, and I have no idea if it could work," McKenna started before feeling like she was speaking out of place, "but what if we land and secure to the rock, then use our thrusters to redirect it?"

Flip is about to repeat himself when the doctor chimes in. He says, "that may be doable, but I don't think the thrusters will have enough juice to move us all without burning out, but if we do what you suggest and then blow the airlocks, the change in pressure may be enough to shift that rocks course."
He then toggles comms and repeats his earlier report to Space Command this time, taking extra care to press the button and roll his dice.

Bridge "That's what I thought," the radio answered to Foreman. "Please stand by for instructions."
"You would need to secure the ship," Tawfeek said to McKenna. "Or else it would slide off and start a spin."
Tawfeek stood up from the monitor.
"Well, the good news is," He stated. "I-BM's just a bunch of idiots. No terrorist links, there. McKenna, I want you to go to the galley and medical bay, and take stock of what we have, just in case something goes wrong."
Outside
As Jessica held the flashlight, Mensk would see past the buckled outer hull, and even through the water hull (the honeycomb of water tanks that, as mentioned with the bread loaf event and in Mutants in Orbit, cover the ship between the inner and outer hull), to see a small hair-line glimmer of light on the other side.

"Bridge, We have hull breach. Its just a hairline for now. You may also want to check our water levels several tanks are breached." he radioed, "Unless you have another option on how to diverting that letting rock slamming into earth. This ship's will not take the stress required and survive. Mengsk out." he radioed.
