Socrates was suprised that the level of magic only reeked. He had expected headaches, or bad visions or any other of the number of nightmares he was told about when it came to highly-magic communities. He even wondered why he was taught to treate it as a reek of magic. He had never heard of a reek of engine noise, or a reek of cannon fire, or a reek of paperwork.
Very curious that he was taught to treat magic like the smell of an outhouse.
As the woman walked away, he noted the large building. "We are expected to be clean?" he asked. With a smirk, he added. "Well, except the cats, who do not seem to see a need for metal doors to clean behind...."

"Hot damn! a shower and chow!" Tori executed a somersault in glee.
Then sanity kicked in. She didn't want to offend their hostess, but a big building with a metal door could well be like a mousetrap. Easy to enter, impossible to leave. The team was still cowboys in the heart of indian country.
She performed her due diligence, inspecting the building for signs of ambush subtly. After the last village, she was adjusting to magic. Instead, she looked to see if the building was reinforced, could be locked from the outside, had signs of explosives, or could be used to trap and ambush her and her teammates. She disguised her search by racing back and forth among smaller children, purring and nuzzling if permitted. After all, what cub didn't love a kitten. Older kids got hi-fives. In the mean time, she checked out the building.

The doctor wishes she had time for a shower and chow, but is no way leaving her charges till she makes sure all are cared for properly. As such she follows the wounded and checks on them as she goes. If there are any questions she says to them, "I am a Doctor, fully trained in many techniques. I will aid you with the wounded tell they are good."
If they ask her to leave she will refuse as patients come first in her mind.

Tori was uncomfortable with everyone in what could be a lockbox. Autumn's declaration was the pretense she needed to serve as a sentry, even though a hot shower and hot chow, maybe a soft bed was all she wanted now.
"Six? I can stay out here and help the doctor if ya want me to."

Realizing he had fumbled his attempt at Shep-styled humour, Socrates spoke a little more factually. "We should be wary, and not let ourselves get too separated." He said, facing noone inparticular, even though Sam was already IDed as the leader. "In addition to our personal safety, I'm certain, some level of... moral risk exists with separation in a thriving community as this. And the services of our team would pale to what they should be able to accomplish themselves."
He didn't want to see Sam and Tori run off and get fixated on helping the wounded. Let the local mages do that. His concern, as Tori and Janxi had put it, themselves, was the overall success of the mission and cohesiveness of the team. Letting Tori and Autumn get too engrossed in the local politics and humanity, as it were, of the community, were a delay, and a risk to the mission's goal.

Janxi heard Socrates attempt at humor. It never failed. As soon as she started warm to the dog, his foot-in-mouth disease flared-up. Her emerald eyes locked on his. Her ears pulled flat against her cap while her tail swished violently from side to side.
She half expected Tori to take his face off, but the little cat was clearly overjoyed at the prospect of food and a shower and didn't care. While battle cats groomed themselves, their human sides still loved showers. Cats didn't sweat, and never carried much of a funk, but confined in armor, fur felt crushed, and a shower meant relaxation.
Tori did something a little out of character. She watched the cat go from child to child purring and playing house cat. What the f... Then Janxi broke her icy stare on Socrates and followed her partner's eyes. She was inspecting the building. Smart. Tori never trusted anyone.
When her little partner returned, she gave her a nuzzle and licked her on the head. It was a feline high-five. Tori then shocked her by volunteering to stay out and help Autumn. She knew the little fuzzface wanted a shower and a meal as badly as she did. Janxi could hear Tori's tummy rumble! Then she came to an understanding. Tori was volunteering to guard Sam, Socrates and the rest of the team while they rested. And she was volunteering in a way that would not offend their hostess. She shot Tori a wink, and returned her icy stare on Socrates.
Still offended by the joke, she gave Socrates a sharp rebuke, only appropriate for a dog. "Socrates, no!" It applied to both joke, and missing the point.
She averted her gaze again slowly and looked at Sam. "I think if Tori and Santiago wanna help the patients outside the rest hall, it ain't gonna be no tactical risk," Janxi said. "After all, if they get in trouble, we'll be jus' inside to lend a hand." She hoped Sam would understand the reversal of her argument. Posting a sentry might offend. Volunteering a medic, that happened to be a Navy SEAL, that was inoffensive, humanitarian and more feline cleverness. Two for cats, zero for dogs.
She took a moment to review their environment, familiarize herself with the layout, and like Tori, search for any possible dangers, the most powerful mages and anything out of place.

Socrates raised an eyebrow. It was just a fumble, nobody can be perfect when trying to be chummy. To his other point, he said, calmly, "You raised an issue of people leaving themselves vulnerable, earlier. And such vulnerability risking the mission. I am merely addressing it. We have received no official welcome, here. And this is a community with a history of bad blood with the CS."
"As for the joke, I am sorry if I have offended you. The was not my intention." He calmly moved his eyes back to Sam, to see her assessment of the situation.

Tori, for her part, didn't even realize she was victim of a joke, or even lightly insulted. She only wore clothing because her drill instructor gave her a standing order to keep her top and keister covered. Clothes seemed confining to her. She was pragmatic enough to know armour was a good idea, but clothes, especially while swimming, were dumb. She figured Socrates understood her nudist nature, or at least was at the Lone Star Animals Training Pool when she provoked one of her incidents.
Nor did she get Janxi's offense about the joke. But she more than understood her offense about Socrates telling her to come inside. She was trying to guard without offending anyone. Socrates was about as subtle as a chancre. He was openly discussing tactics and security, when she ensured their security without offending anyone.
"Socrates? Why don't you go in and get comfortable?" She said to diffuse the argument. "If we get into trouble, we'll yell, and we ain't gonna be anywhere but right outside your door." She hoped the obtuse dog would finally get it and shut up. "Y'all should discuss or safety inside. We got work to do."
That was about as subtle as she could get without shouting, "I'm guarding you!!"
To further drive home her point, she returned to treating the Marlins' wounded. Even if they were all treated, she would at least bring water, and ask if their pain required medication. Something to stay outside, so even a genius like Socrates could go in, and take a shower. While under guard.

Socrates looked at the cats rather quizzically. He was giving Sam and Shep suggestions based on how he understood the situation, and yet they were acting like he was barking orders. Moreover that, if he was, those orders were free to be ignored. He had seen superiors shoot his comrades for that kind of insolence.
The fact that the cats were happier attacking him and his suggestions than actually bringing concerns or better suggestions to Sam and Shep was troubling. And a greater threat to the team than his suggestions might be. But, he wasn't keeping score, so he'ld persevere until the mission was done.
Maybe he would retire when this was over. Maybe some desk clerk needed a bodyguard in Chi-Town. He could write a video book just for the fun of watching it get supressed in the CS and published elsewhere.
Maybe he could find the mythical Sargeant Smith that Shep had pined about (DIG!) and work with her. Sounded more pleasant than this, anyways.
Regardless of what the cats had to say, Socrates remained quiet, and waited for Sam to give a judgement. Sam, of course being the one to give the intructions on how to proceed, as opposed to the cats.

The fears were put to rest when they got a better look at the building. The large sliding door was the only part of the building any member of the squad couldn't smash through with ease. It was more of a concern about a collapse. In the back was a simple shower system with a large vat of water and a couple buckets to fill it with and two seoerate stalls. The water was clean, collected from rainfall, but it wasn't warm.

Little kitty remained outdoors. A hot shower or a cold shower would wait. She helped out with the wounded, played with the cubs and fished. Beyond all that, she watched the door. Nobody was going to give her buddies a "Hitler shower." Tori had their six.
She did a bit of preening, and for her empty stomach, she remedied with a Slim-Jim. It was more preservatives than meat, but it served as a feline-friendly snack.
Hopefully, with bow in hand, she'd nab a fish.

Janxi stalked to the shower room. She looked for anything that indicated the women's head. And if there was only one head, she would stalk in and slam the door behind her.
Armor dropped off piece by piece. She rat-foxed her rucksack and fished out a bottle of Harmon odorless hunting shampoo and body wash. The water went on and she BATHED. A good long soak, a suds-up from head to toe, then a rinse. The feel of water felt sublime on her cut form. Any women, Sam most especially, would be shared with.
She toweled off with out words, pulled on clean UDT shorts, complete with tail hole. Then she added a sports bra, and an OD T-shirt. Leaving, she glanced at Sam, and blinked twice and gave the Captain a nuzzle that half bowled her over.
She stalked outside and sat on a stump. "Gawddmn, T, you can't shoot for shit," Janxi said watching her partner whiff on bowfishing.

Sam shakes her head, "Your concerns are noted, Soc, but I think we'll all right for now. We'll continue as indicated, everyone has something to do, so let's do it."
Doing her best to not yelp at the cold water, Sam cleans herself off as best as she can. She is a bit surprised by the nuzzle, but simply regains her balance and smiles at the cat, recognizing the gesture for what it was. Finishing getting ready and heads outside and checks to see how thing are going.

The doctor not caring about her needs except to make sure that her hands are clean and disenfected continues to work on those that need it. If she has to she will even use her powers to help, but that will be a last resort if need be.

If need be she will work until on the verge of collapse to make sure all charges are taken care of to the best of her ability. Tori grabbed her sister. "Sorry, I missed, but I woulda shared!" She re-nockeded her arrow after she reeled it in. She sneered at the water and knocked the arrow again.
"So who is mad at me for standing guard, and shooting for chow? And why am I hated?"
Tori snuggled and sighed. She whispered to Janxi, but by then, she didn't give a damn. "I'm taking a bath!"
