With no strikes being rolled, both attacks are wide of the target, making craters where the hit the ground.
Montrose is about hand-to-hand distance.

Taking care to move so she doesn't accidentally hit Coop, Sarah attempts to hit Montrose with a karate kick to the knee to disable him.

Montrose took the hit, but it did no damage, due to his really thick monster hide. That close, Mierin could only barely see what was left of the professor under the monstrous veneer.

That close, Coop tried one last shot with the magical wapon, nearly pressing the barrel to Montrose as he fired

Well, regardless of what kind of rifle it was, the damage was just enough...
Montrose found his misection to be severely lacking in the internal organ department, after Coop's blast. In a few seconds, his body slumped to the ground, lifeless.
As he did, everyone could feel the magic energy he had remaining surge out of him and into the environment. However, the effect is nothing like the former professor had hoped for. Magic lines surged upwards from the ground. For the first time in an age, there was more magic than the pyramid needed to run the city. Four lines of magic, each 100 feet high, threaded out from the pyramid, out of the crater, across the floating continent, and then out, all over Shards.
The blue lines let off a cool glow, shining on the faces of those who survived: human and the remaining demon alike...
Eleutheroi was picking up an unconscious Moe as Crynn'Jol walked over. "Montrose was a time bomb. When his magic was at its peak, he was to be killed, either by us or them." He says. "We needed his to burn off as much as possible before that happened. Moe was kind enough to help with that, as did you."
Tobrias, looking tired but safe made his way over. "So." He says, dropping the frighteningly large sword-weapon he had to the ground. "Ready for the cover story of a life time?"
Thus ends the second volume of the History of Golthreia.
