"Pardon me for saying this Mr. Tesla, but bullocks. Let me know how to best take that thing apart with the cultists nearby, and I'll get it done."

Tesla points out a series of gears and relays. "Yes, this should work to disable the device, though I should warn you that the feedback is likely to be...somewhat dangerous."

"Always did want to see what wrestling a lightning bolt felt like," mutters Rex. "Think you can muster up a white flash to blind them long enough for me to run in, and preferably disable the machine."

Tesla nods and begins to walk away from you towards the cultists.
"I am Nikola Tesla, and I say your perversion of my work ends today." He jams his cane into the ground like a wizard's staff sending up an arc of lightning that blinds the group.

"...sweet mother..." mutters Rex, averting his eyes just before the flash, hurries to the machine, inserting Tesla's invention as instructed, and bracing himself for the supposed feedback.

The gears begin to grind and the coils begin to heat and pop. The cultist swarm Tesla. "If we die for the All-Consumer, so shall you!"

"...blast..." seeing Tesla being swarmed, but not sure if he can help or if the sabotage requires his continued attention.

The sabotage is commencing apace; Rex will have to act quickly if he expects to rescue Tesla and escape in time.

"...track and field, swear after this..." mutters Rex, mind running down the options, knowing he's more durable and nimble than fast, takes a deep breath and breaks into a full blown run [Spd 14, PP 25, PE 29]
Narrowing his focus on avenues of escape, darts through the crowd as best as possible. "Apologies Mr. Tesla!" he says seconds before scooping the brilliant inventor up into a fireman's carry, not stopping his stride even with the act.

You rush with Tesla as the device explodes outwards, the electromagnetic force making your teeth rattle as you are pushed out a boarded window (15 SDC damage) and begin to tumble 3 stories. Or you would, if you did not feel something like that same force slowing your fall. You see sweat dripping from Tesla's brow as his cane glows with concealed wiring. "Just...a...little...more."
You land with a jolt on the sidewalk. Tesla does his best to dust himself off. "If you'll pardon me, young man, I fear I'm rather drained from this excursion and will need to leave the rest to you."

Smashing through the boarded up window, Rex finds himself pondering life spent well or misspent, thoughts racing through his head of folks he knows, and even a couple of 'I should really send a telegram their way' people he nearly forgotten about, until the fall slows, and he can appreciate both Tesla's achievement in slowing their fall, and how detailed the sidewalk is, ever little crack and cranny, and even a few ants scouting around.
"...I hope that was alright. I know how you dislike contact, but was the only thing I could think of to get us both out of there." Finding his footing, Rex smiled. "And thanks for not letting us decorate the sidewalk."
Nods, "I'll need to get my gear, and from now on, not going anywhere without it."

"A wise precaution young man." Tesla stumbles back to the car.
(So, what will you do next? Go back in to find survivors? Contact the authorities? Flee with Tesla?)

"Mr. Tesla, here, I know you dislike it, but let me help you back to the car before I check on anything still inside."

"Very well" Tesla sighs as you help him back in.
