Vivian is helping out at Lex's family bakery as the customers lined up to place their orders for the week. It was a busy time as the harvest was coming in and the prices were good enough that everyone could afford a little extra for the coming winter.

Lex was busy trying to keep up with his sister, keeping ingredients full and the ovens going with whatever was ready. When soomething was cooled enough, he'd take it out for display on the shelves behind the counter, which gave him a chance to see how Vivian was making out, and to say hi to familiar customers.[rand=241983393262622479586942076333162110863828164719128660376104493304]

Vivian helps with serving customers, glad that she'd been able to get out of the house and away from her mother going on and on about the suitors who had been interested in her.[rand=51122570823973788065950620461837176883875548359944140045081671161]

Vivian is the first to notice the man in a tattered army uniform. Despite his shabby dressed, he was mostly clean and his hair and fingernails were well tended - a man who still tried to keep himself disciplined. But there was a look in those eyes Vivian recognized in Lex's - a distant and dark look that sometimes worried him.
Lex wasn't paying too much attention as he saw a couple of pin-stripped goons walking in.

Lex spotted the new arrivals, but didn't make eye contact. This was the last place he wanted trouble, and doing anything confrontational would cause just that. "Viv, you need any help out here, let me know."He headed back for the kitchen.

Vivian replies to Lex, "I will." Vivian keeps serving the customers with a polite smile. She doesn't act any differently to the man in the army uniform as she figured if he was anything like Lex, and the look in his eye seemed to indicate he might be, he wouldn't want to talk about it with a stranger.

Vivian could see the veteran reaching out to Lex as he went back, but he was held back by some kind of fear. Clearly it was not a fear the pinstripes shared as they were clearly heading back to talk to him.

Lex noticed someone was paying attention to him as he started into the back room, and stopped just through the doorway. He turned politely and asked, "Can I help you?[rand=447875605586141367709197301386719258145071252254835419427992035288]

Vivian was about to say something about the two following Lex, but stays quiet, glad that he saw them. She continues serving customers, but keeps a wary out out on what is going on with him.

The head pinstripe is a lean figure with a hawkish nose and greying temples. "A moment for your friends, Lexington? For some friends of your father? In private?"
Vivian can just make out the words "Father" and "Private." When the veteran puts a hand on her shoulder. "Excuse me ma'am, but I think things could get violent - might I help?"

Lex took a bit of a breath. " It's short for Oleksandr, not Lexington, but it's not the first time I've heard that mistake." He thought for a moment, his mind racing how to keep his family out of what was happening. " We can talk outside."
Pulling off his apron, Lex started for the for the front door. He was apprehensive, but tried to keep it to himself as he sppoke to Vivian," I'll be back in a minute. I need to have a chat with these gentleman. Only take a little bit." At the same time he was heading for the door.

The pinstripes follow Lex into the alley outside the bakery.
"Thank you meeting with us, sir. We've come to understand that you have certain...skills that can be brought to bear on a mutual problem of ours. An...olive oil problem." Lex understood the implication - they were rivals of Marconi's. "We're thinking you are the man who can help us with that problem. Are we correct?"
The Veteran removes his hand. There is a questioning and confused look in his eyes. "Are you sure?"

Lex was torn for the moment. On one hand, he was out of the munitions game though he had never made his retirement announced, but on the other hand, it was a chance to rid the city of Marconi. Thoughts of family came to mind as he considered," I'm sorry gentlemen, as much as I'd like to help, I'm no longer in my former stock and trade. I retired when I moved here to help out with the family business. Though I am curious what you were looking for?"

Vivian keeps a polite smile on her face as she replies, "I'm sure. Now what can I get for you, sir?"
