Opening Text Sometimes it helps to start at the beginning. So this chapter starts at the beginning…
Of a message Jessica received from one of Baron Dioxin’s men. It was simple enough: they had a job for the Galaxy, but didn’t want to contact Tawfeek directly, so the nature of the job was such that they wanted Jessica to vouch for them. They did not specifically indicate what job they were asking them to do.
(OOC: Baron Dioxin is the same kind of personality as the NPC in Mutants in Orbit, but human, just like everyone else.)
Jessica and Tawfeek would have both had dealings with Dioxin in the past – it would be hard not to – but never directly. This time, they were being asked to meet him.
What’s happened recently
The ship was actually greeted by the [DIG]United States of Canada[/DIG]’s equivalent of the Coast Guard in space. A pair large orange-and-white escort cruisers brought the Galaxy through the North American nation’s airspace, landing at the Kennedy Space Centre’s private landing ports. There, Captain (shipless) Stewart X and Franklin were unloaded and sent for proper medical treatment, and the cargo unloaded.
They got their pay, and were off again, after a week off on Earth, to look for work.
Tawfeek seemed to be having trouble securing work, lately. Something to do with a confusing set of trade regulations, and his crew’s habit of being heroes attracting attention. Wobbly-headed dolls, unfortunately weren’t going to carry the bill, so he needed a better job.
It was about that time that Jessica got the message.
In Jessica’s quarters
The message flickered in front of her, with time-specific co-ordinates for the link-up.
On the bridge
Tawfeek had come in, after trying to pursue another job, and sat across from Foreman.
“It’s the multi-nationals. They’re trying to force the small companies either to join them, or move underground.” Get grunted. “Space is going corporate.”
Where McKenna is
Things are going smoothly. Tawfeek hadn’t given her trouble, lately, the other matter seemingly resolved. Also, he was distracted trying to get work.

Flip had been surprised by the escort, but deftly moved the ship into formation and brought it in for a landing.
Even though they had down time on Earth it seemed the Captain kept him busy enough that he hadn't had any time to talk with MJ.
As he sits across from the Captain he listens to the Captain and notes his frustration, "well boss, I don't know anything about finding work. Maybe you should talk to Mensk. On our last trip in, he mentioned he may have a lead or an idea for a job. Maybe its something the corporations haven't dipped their fingers in yet," he says with shrug.

With enough dowtime on Earth, and the Captain's permission, McKenna had slipped off to visit family for a couple days and do a little shopping. now that they were underway again, she had set about the task of re-organizing med lab. clear of her Ex, she was thankful for some time to clear her head. Frankie had made a mess of things as he always did, and now she had to pick up the pieces again.

Jessica enjoys the downtime on Earth and, if possible, tries to arrange time to meet up with her father. If not, she'll arrange to talk to him on video phone so they can get caught up on what is going on each others lives.
She is a bit surprised to get the call about a job from Baron, but knows that Tawfeek will be happy about the prospect of work. When she receives the time specific co-ordinates for the link up, Jessica contact the captain and says, "I'd like to speak to you for a moment, please, Captain."

On the Bridge
Tawfeek looked up to Jessica, then back to Foreman, then over to Jessica. Getting up, he headed for the door. “Keep course. Enjoy the view.” He said to Foreman as he left the bridge.
In Tawfeek’s Quarters
Tawfeek guided Jessica into his ready/living room. The living room still had the seldom-used look it did the last time she was there. “So, what’s up?” He asked her, plainly, as the door closed.

After a bit, McKenna got bored, realizing she could only move so much around and still be practical. Giving up, she headed to the galley, collected two cups of coffee and continued on to the bridge. She knew Flip was on duty, and hadn't spoken to him except in passing since the whole mess with her ex on board. In fact it sort of felt like everyone was keeping their distance over the whole thing. Once the bridge door opened, she was a bit suprised to find Flip alone, expecting Tawfeek to be there as well. She asked nervously, "Is it okay for me to be on the bridge with the Captain not here?"

Flip glances back over his shoulder at the voice, "hey MJ. Think it should be fine, just don't touch anything. He's more stressed over not having work than anything else right now. If you have any ideas, you can just tell him thats why you came up."
He shrugs his shoulders, "either way, he just stepped out to see Jessica so should be a few minutes before he comes back. How are you doing with everything that happened?"

Jessica sits down and smiles at Tawfeek. "I've got a lead on some work." she tells him "I received a message from one of Baron Dioxin’s men. They have a job for us and they contacted me to vouch for them. Now while I've had dealings with Baron in the past, I've never dealt with him directly. He wants us to meet him. I've been sent co-ordinates and a time."

McKenna nodded as she walked onto the bridge. " I figured you could use this," she said as she offered one of the mugs. " I brought the other for the Captain as a bit of a peace offering." She glanced down at the floor," I, uh... , I guess I'm doing okay. Tawfeek giving me a little time planetside helped clear my head. At least now everyone knows why I'm such a basket case."

Flip takes the offered cup and says,"thanks MJ that was sweet of you."
He takes a sip then says to her, "I wouldn't say basket case, I would say human. Everyone of us has baggage. Why do you think I'm here and not out flying military cruisers or fighters? What happened in your past doesn't make you who you are, how you handle it and learn from it is what matters."
"I don't know all the details, but from what I gather, your handling things pretty well," he shrugs, "but that's just my opinion." and he finishes in thought, 'but then again, I'm not totally partial.'

A slight smile crossed McKenna's face as she looked up at Foreman. " Thanks Flip. Problem is, I don't see anyone else's baggage getting in the way. I mean really, what are the odds that my ex would show up in a broken down ship in the middle of nowhere?"

"In the way would have been leaving him on the East Saint Louis' to suck vacuum. Instead you pulled his ass to safety and didn't kill him while on board. See, handling things well," he says with a smile.
"As for the odds," he shrugs, "its like this Captain and the universe have an arrangement. Like whoever runs things around us is in league with the Captain all to give his crew a bad day, or weird adventure. I mean think about our history so far, bread loaves in space, robotic spiders and a smuggling operation, Floating ship with a pirate ship that looked like a comet but was not a comet," he says ticking off items on his fingers, "it's been a wild ride."

In Tawfeek's Living room
"Alright," he says with a sigh. "Can't be worse than the manure offer I got this morning."
And he went to the bridge.
On the Bridge
"It's not a wild ride until it's over." Tawfeek said behind the two. "And it's funny you should bring up an inside joke with the universe, because it's exactly to the Inside Joke that we're going. Stephens will get us there. No questions, and your best behaviour. His is Baron Dioxin, and he expects well-behaved employees. Got it?"

Flip doesn't cringe like one would think, "I wasn't really saying inside joke, more like conspiracy," he says while winking at McKenna.
He turns back to the controls, "Jessica, you got some coordinates for me, or are you going to take us there," he says in his business like pilot tone.

Jessica simply punches a few buttons on the computer and enters the co-ordinates into the ship's database. "The co-ordinates are in the system." She tells Foreman, her tone matching his business like tone. Turning back to Tawfeek, Jessica says, "If you need me, I'll be in my workshop." Jessica then leaves the bridge and heads to her workshop, intending to work on modifying some of the guns she has.
