Sentiment toward other nations: Forbes of course is suspicious and dislikes citizens of enemy nations. All Arabs and Muslims he will suspect to be terrorists. He dislikes Somalis, North Koreans and Chinese, though will tolerate their presence and be polite. Allied nations he is friendly towards.
Sentiments towards Americans: Thinks highly of anyone in uniform, but is a bit scornful of pogues and those with lesser training (almost everyone). He realizes he is well trained and highly intelligent, but tries hard not to seem cocky.
Disposition: Forbes is a bit anti-social, having what some consider mild Aspbergers syndrome. He tends to focus on the task at hand to the point of obsession, and is a master of military intelligence and history having published at the Army War College. He can make friends, and is not a severe Aspberger case, but even in social events, he always seems a bit far away and lost in thought.

Many mistake this for a lack of confidence or think he's intimidated. He's not. He also tends to speak his mind and be blunt, but has some clue when to keep his mouth shut.

Weaknesses:
Despite advanced training, a high IQ, fantastic reflexes, and recently discovered abilities, Lt. Forbes has very little actual field experience, about 5 months in Iraq and another 3 in Afghanistan. During his time in the Army, he has gone from one school to the next, Basic, Advanced Infantry, Air assault, Airborne, Ranger Qualification, OCS, Special Forces, free-fall parachuting and finally Delta Training. He relies on history and theory rather than practical experience. Improvising enemies may get the better of him, at least at first, with unconventional tactics. At the same time, his encyclopedic knowledge of military engagements and tactics mean he will recognize a number of gambits.
He is also anti-social, and while capable of making friends, he always comes off as odd. People recognized his high IQ early on, but his singular focus means he has little understanding of the non-military world. He is likely to make a fool of himself in front of women, or would be awkward at a party, wishing to discuss Soviet Tank Doctrine of the 1980's with the host, rather than mingle and have a good time. He's speech is clipped, and people do not easily trust him. He has great difficulty making eye contact with anyone, and always seems to be in his own little world, even though he pays fantastic attention to the world around him.
He is a confident and competent officer, but likely to be questioned by NCO's with more experience. He is willing to listen, but if he does not agree, he will put a subordinate in his place. While this has made for some grumbling, a few NCO's with bruised feelings grudgingly admit he is a tactical genius.
In "Lightning Bolt" mode, which he has only recently discovered and used on two occasions, his demeanor changes. The one time in battle, he used it to decimate an entire force of Taliban fighters with 10:1 superiority over his own team. Enraged, the power manifested itself, and he felt super-powered and able to destroy every enemy on the field. Then again, they were all just Taliban insurgents, none had any ability other than some sneakiness, and the ability to fire weapons. He's not battled any other supers, and only became aware that there are more of his kind in the world, both good and evil.
Personal Dossier, Forbes, Karl, 1st LT, USA 1st SFOD-Delta
(Including statements from acquaintances, officers and subordinates)
Classification: Above Top Secret
Father: SSgt Randal Forbes, USA, 5th SF, Ret.:
Age 52
Assignments, 101st Air Assault, 75th Ranger, 5th SF
Deployments: Operation Eagle Claw, Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada), Operation High King (raid on Iraqi chemical plant), Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm
A distinguished special forces soldier, SSgt. Forbes fought in a number of covert operations in the 1980's. He earned 2 purple hearts and three bronze stars for his actions. In 1990, shortly before Desert Shield became the air and ground offensive known as Desert Storm, he was tasked with leading a Kurdish and American ops team to destroy a chemical weapons depot near Kirkuk.
Though the raid went well, retreating republican guard soldiers released some of the weapons, including VX, GB and mustard. Other agents present but unidentified. Soldiers with ripped MOPP suits succumbed to the gas. Most survivors showed evidence of moderate exposure to nerve agents. Atropine treatments were provided before evacuation of survivors by 160th SOAR MH-60 Blackhawks. SSgt. Forbes recovered aboard USS Comfort. Returned to unit. Fought with distinction in several skirmishes
Joined team for assault on Republican Guard Compound near Sulaymaniyah. Objective: Destroy Scud missile storage and launching capability. Mission: success. Chemical warheads believed present but unconfirmed. Redundant strike launched by US Army AH-64 helicopter units, 1btn, 227 AvReg used hydra 70 rockets and AGM-114 missiles. SSgt. Forbes only survivor. Evacuated to Ramstein Airforce Base, and Ft. Sam Houston with thermal and chemical burns combined with additional nerve agent exposure.
Current status: 100 % Disability, James A. Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, Fla. Diagnosis: Debilitative nerve disease and dementia caused by repeated exposure to nerve agents. Possible GWS prompted by exposure to DU munitions. PTSD.
Mother: Gabrielle (O'Shay) Franceton (divorced and remarried), 44, Lt. Col. Director Trauma Nursing, Bethesda Naval Hospital (Walter Reid National MilitaryMedical Center)
O'Shay met SSgt. as a trauma Nurse at Ft. Sam Houston. Though suffering numerous trauma, TBI and PTSD, SSgt. Forbes remained high functioning and able to complete therapy. He received a discharge, the two married and conceived a son, Karl.
Divorced 2001, with the elder Forbes suffering from peripheral nervous disease, PTSD, and chronic pain self medicated with alcohol. Son left in his custody as they seemed to have a bond she never had with Karl. Returned to active duty at Ft. Sam. Before departing, she made several claims of domestic violence against husband.
Thelma Barnes (guidance counselor, Hillsborough HS, Tampa Florida)
Statement:
"Karl Forbes? What year was he? Oh yeah, supposed to be '09... How could I forget him? Probably the smartest student I've ever seen. He was fluent in English and Spanish in 9th grade. Mind like a sponge. He could have been anything, but all he wanted to do was join the service. His teachers said he learned in 1/4 the time what another student learned in a year. They always thought he was daydreaming, but somehow, whether he was reading ahead, or working on another assignment from another class, he always could tell the teacher what was just said, or answer a question. It was spooky, really. We tried to get him to learn about some other careers, he could have been a doctor or a scientist. We said he could save the world that way. Watching his father wither away, plus 9-11 and the wars. He always said he wanted to save the world. But it was all about war. He wanted to join the wrestling team and was in powerlifting. His coaches were awed by his dedication and physical ability, but to him, it was all about becoming a soldier. Even a state championship in wrestling as a Sophmore and scholarships, we couldn't get him to give a new goal like college a chance."
Dr. Geoff Alexander, DDS, Tampa Florida,
Statement
"He was in my scout troop. Joined at 11, out at 13, with his Eagle Scout and gold palm. He wanted to learn everything. Shooting, camping, survival, orienteering, pioneering, whatever. He never really got along with the other scouts. I think some tried to bully him because he just never fit in. It wasn't fun for him. It was business. Wanted to be in the Army like his dad, who was starting to fade away. He was really mature though. When he stopped coming, I called up. He just said, 'I've received what I've needed from scouting. It is time to move on, but your assistance is appreciated.' It felt as clinical as a doctor telling me I had cancer."
Lt. Col Paul Webster (Ret), Military Science instructor, JROTC
Statement:
"Forbes? God that kid was weird. He'd be doing some Trig homework in my class during a lecture. I figured he was just bored and called him out. I said he'd owe me 10 if he couldn't tell me what the lecture was about. He proceeded to give me a more detailed analysis of the Battle of Gettysburg than was in the lecture, including units, commanders, formations and key conflicts. He read so many history books. It was about all he did. Thought he wanted to save the world. Finished my program in two years. We figured he'd be back, but he got a waiver for National Guard at 17.. Managed to get his GED during basic. You ever heard of that? Probably got him into some Intel Program now. The kid was squared away, but he was a computer."
1st Sgt Henry Rivera, AIT (Infantry) instructor, Ft. Benning
Statement
"Forbes? How could I forget PFC. Forbes? By the time we get new privates, they're usually squared away, but this kid was different. It's like he knew everything. Guys would struggle with formations, tactics, and if he didn't know it, he'd learn it during the day. I didn't know it at the time, but he enrolled himself in college language courses and Middle Eastern studies. Some of the other privates gave him some shit about learning about Hajis. He just nodded his head and said one had to know his enemy.
"Strangest damn thing I ever saw. He was out on the obstacle course one day and a storm came out of nowhere. He was running hard with a full pack and rifle. Lightning came out of the sky BAM! and he flew back 10 feet. I called for a medic, and we figured the kid was dead. When we got there, he sat up, and said, "You need to go inside. It's storming out here."
Maj. Aldus Washington, 75th Rangers
Statement:
"I was a captain at the time and had been recycled for Ranger Qualifications. They had me as a platoon leader, with this Spec. 4 Forbes in my unit. Yeah, there were NCO's there that were senior, but this Forbes kid. He was a natural. He was a hell of a fighter armed and unarmed.
"Some of the sergeants took offense, but during repetitions, he would offer me suggested tactics. Even an LT in our group wanted to bust him when Forbes said his tactics were shit. But you know what? It paid off every time. The kid was barely 18, there as a member of the damn National Guard, and talking like that. He got us honor unit, and I recommended him for OCS."
Record:
Spec. Forbes transferred to Active Duty USA. with several qualifications including airborne, ranger air assault, sniper school, language school, and SERE. He was also a light heavyweight boxing champion. Briefly served in the 82nd Airborne in Iraq before being accepted into OCS.
He graduated OCS, given his high intellect and large number of college credits received from AP classes, correspondence courses, night school and testing out of prerequisites. Received a BA in Middle Eastern Studies and Languages. Commissioned as a 2nd. Lt. Oct 11, 2010.
Received invitations to try out for 75th Rangers and USA SF. Selected SF, and completed training in 6 months. High scores and positive recommendations from trainers, combined with a keen intellect, superior physical conditioning and a knowledge of Americas enemies, including cultures and languages got him invited to try out for Delta Force. He completed training and became a Delta Operator assigned to Afghanistan. Rank: 1st. Lt.
MstrSgt Adolpho Benevides 1st SFOD-D, Afghanistan
Statement:
"The new LT? He seemed like a good team leader. Really quiet. We thought he was weird because he'd never look into our eyes. We just figured because he was new, and hadn't seen a lot of action, he was nervous around us vets who were on our fourth, fifth or even sixth deployment. We called him Abed, like that guy on TV, cuz he speaks like 20 haji languages, and is weird. Sometimes he just tells you what he's thinking like that dude, even if it pisses ya off.
"He'd hear us out, and sometimes he'd let us do it our way, or sometimes he'd say it was his way. Either way, he seemed like a smart officer. Never took dumb chances. He was ice cold during our first couple of engagements. Set a good example, and didn't waste our time with stupid shit. Even when we got bad orders from SOCOM, he did his best to keep us alive. We never had heavy losses and managed to kill or capture some priority Taliban and Al Quaida operatives.
"Well, I guess now, you're asking about the chopper crash. That was when the Hajis shot down that Chinny full of Team Six dicks. They thought they were hot shit when they zipped bin Ladin. Guess those guys were the alert team to chopper in to the area where some Rangers were takin' heavy fire. Anyhow, LT tells us we're closer, and we're truckin' in. We get on the humvees, 12 guys on the team in three victors. Even see the Ch-47 fly right over. We're goin up this mountain road, when boom. An RPG lights up the helo, then the crash. We knew they were goners, but the rangers were still requesting support and extraction. Comin' down our way, we meet some technicals with DshK's, but we lit em up quick.
"LT tells us to park and takes half the team up the ridge, including me. We get lit up quick, and realize the odds are pretty long. The rangers were getting torn apart, and the helo with the Seals? Burnin. LT is firing away, killing anything that pops up, but we're getting flanked fast.
"And uh... This is when the story gets weird.. I mean real weird. Some of the other guys said they didn't see nothin' but we're not bucking for section 8's. The fire was increasin', and we kept encounterin' more and more Hadjis. We requested some air, but no fast movers were available, and they were reluctant to send out more choppers with all the RPG fire. They didn't want another repeat of Mogga...
"So we took a few losses, they took heavy casualties, and our trucks were givin' us all they could, til we lost the lead Humvee. LT is looking scared, like all the sudden he's realized he ain't making it out. Then there was this smell, like turnin' off an old TV. And he gets into some kinda trance. I shook him to see if he took one, but he shocked me. Not bad, but like when you take some static from your coat in the winter and touch the car door.
"Then he walks out in fire, and all these sparks start shootin' off him. He was zipping and zinging, but the sparks got brighter and brighter. Eventually, he ran into the heaviest Habudabi position, and we saw them tally-wackers get shocked like lightning. Then, it got crazier still. The lightning pulled back into him, and he began to glow. He musta shot up into the air 100 feet, like a lightning bolt, hung there in the sky, and started firing zaps into their positions. What he didn't fry, ran away like they'd seen Allah hisself. Me? I crossed myself, and prayed my rosary. Then, there was thunder, and the LT was gone. I ain't seen him since, but I swear to the Virgin, sir, I saw it with my own eyes. I don't know what the fuck he was, but he saved our team and those Rangers. You all seen those haji bodies, he fried 'em."
From Incident Response Team Report: Maj. Nathanial Baum, USAMRIID:
"We encountered 1st LT. Forbes in Kandahar. He was fairly inebriated at the time. Given potential for exposure, we approached at MOPP Level 4 with Delta support. Subject offered no resistance. His only comment was, 'I suppose this proves I'm a freak.'
"Subject transported to Ft. Deitrich, Md. under heavy guard and stored in isolation area. Subject willingly submits to cursory physical exam. No toxins, biological or chemical agents detected. As a precaution, medical staff continues using Biohazard Level 3 precautions.
"Extensive MRI body scanning shows no abnormalities. Patient healthy and in excellent condition. Cranial PET scans show massive brain function in areas responsible for cognitive ability. Other aberrant brain function detected. Function unclear. EEG also shows irregular wave activity.
"As a stressor factor, subject was informed he was now considered to be an experimental subject, and was scheduled for exploratory cranial surgery at 0700 hours on 09 Oct. 2011. Subject requested a JAG Attorney and was informed he was officially listed dead and had no legal standing to terminate procedure.
"Subject appeared to accept fate, and was menaced by Delta security at the hatch of his vault. Was told he would be NPO until further notice. Subject nodded, and appeared to sleep. At 0137, subject's EEG accelerated until sensors shorted after approximately .25 microseconds. Subject glowed and appeared to assume the form of lightning or an electrical arc. Subject manifested lightning from the hands and blasted through secure door after two or three blasts. Hallway security mobilized, but subject drove them away by emitting a heavy aura of electricity. At that moment, the subject accelerated to the elevator while in flight, blasted doors, and ascended through airlocks, elevator car upper level and roof before leaving the facility with a series of high speed movements. Implanted insulated tracking device tracked him to the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in a remote. Did not pursue as Hurricane Jacob was in the area at the time. Notified JCS, USACOS, and SecDef subject demonstrated extreme powers and advised of location.
Sgt. Xander Ramirez, USMC, 2nd Recon Div, Force Recon:
Statement:
"He was just out on the beach, watching the storm, and some pretty impressive cloud lightning. Forbes had nothing but a hospital gown on, and was soaking wet. Still, he didn't seem too bothered. He heard my approach and looked back, asking if I had come to kill him, or to take him in for a lobotomy. I told him those were not options if he knew what was expected of him. I informed 1st. Lt. Forbes he was still a soldier of the United States, and his abilities did not excuse him from duty, but rather gave him an even higher role to play in national defense and security. I then informed him he had a job waiting should he want.
"'Well, if it's a job or a lobotomy, then I guess I'm still a soldier.' He said, but he never could quite look me in the eye. I told him what we are building with S.P.I.R.I.T and that there were others like him, like us. He nodded and agreed to meet me at a safe house. Then he lit up into a flash and disappeared. Next time I saw him, he was in ACU at the safe house, waiting for me. The guy's strange, but he's a genius, a gifted fighter, and with some experience, could be a good leader for us."
