“Good afternoon gentleman.” Said the the seated at the window.
“Good afternoon, sir. Thank you for seeing us on such short notice.” Said the elder of the two men
“I was under the understanding this was important, Mr. Chalmers.”
“Yes-sir, Mr. President.” Replied Geoff Chalmers, Deputy Director the National Security Council. “Sir, this is Major Randall. He is the liaison for the new initiative that you were briefed on last week.
“
Oh yes,”the President chuckled, “You need a better name though. Do you really call it S.H.I.T.?”
“No sir.” Major Randall stiffened. “ Super Human Initiative Rapid Intervention Team, or Spirit for short. We know that no one is supposed to know we are deploying this team, but we thought it would give them a patriotic spin even if they will be a covert team.”
The President nodded. “ That has a much better spin, gentleman. Let’s have the details then. The shortened version, I don't need the four hundred pages of case studies and other gibberish I could waste the time of some aide for the next three weeks on. Give it to me in a nutshell.”
“If I may, sir?” Came a voice from the other side of the room
“What the...?” The President sat back, shocked as a third man appeared from thin air and saluted
“Sergeant Xander Ramirez, Formerly of Marines Force Recon before recently being reactivated and transferring to special assignment with the NSA. Sorry to scare you Mr. President, but I convinced Director Chalmers that it was the best way to emphasize our point. No one can do what I can. Not Rangers, not SEALs, not Delta. I did my best to hide what I am and tried to use it only when I had to so others wouldn't know and be afraid. In a unit comprised of super troopers as Major Randall like to refer to us, we wouldn't have to hold back and could use our powers openly. The team would have the full support of the military, but would operate as NSA agents to free us from chain of command somewhat and allow for recruitment from all branches. It would also allow us to partake in operations in fields that would have severe consequences if a recognized team was used. Since I'm the guinea pig for the project, I've already partaken in three missions no one else could touch in China, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.”
“ Ramirez...” Randall started, looking a bit concerned.
“ With all due respect Major, but if the president doesn't have clearance for our operations, we have a problem.” Ramirez cut his superior off.
“ Well said, young man.” the President agreed. “ But I am a bit concerned. Do you think this team is above the law?”
“ No sir. “ Ramirez replied. “ Anyone on this team will operate with the utmost respect for both the honor of our country and follow the rules of engagement. But we will regularly be in situations above and beyond the operational capabilities of your standard special forces team. With all due respect, but you've seen the specials on discovery channel? We're the Great White sharks that make the SEALs hide on the beach so they don't get eaten.” The young soldier smiled as he folded his arms.
The president grinned as well. “ I like it, but how long can it last? Surely your units will recognize something is amiss when you start zipping off to save the world.”
“ That's why the NSA connection.” Chalmers spoke up. “ all will be transferred to our agency for special assignments. When not on field missions, they will have a cover desk assignment to assist with projects it their fields of expertise. For example, Sergeant Ramirez will help with field medicine and infiltration projects. This will also give team members a chance to live a somewhat normal home life if they so choose, provided they don't reveal anything classified while on personal time.”
The President rubbed his chin for a moment. “ Sergeant, did you say reactivated?”
“Yes-sir” Ramirez nodded. “ I served three tours in the Middle East before settling down with my wife and two sons in El Paso. These two gentleman tracked me down, and made this offer and I couldn't refuse. “
The President looked at Chalmers with interst,”and what kind of offer could coerce you back into the field?”
Chalmers swallowed, but Colonel Randall answered for him, “Nothing underhanded, I can assure you, sir. A raise in paygrade equivalent to Captain plus hazard pay. Operational expense account with a streamlined requisition system for special equipment, which means basically they tell Mr. Chalmers what they need for a mission and he sees to it they get it. Full medical benefits for their immediate family as well as a large insurance policy. And once a year, at Sgt. Ramirez's request, we provide a vacation for the team members and their families, within reason. We will make the same offer to each operative we recruit.”
Xander shrugged, “ Pretty cheap considering how we'll be putting our lives on the line every mission.”
“Indeed. And will you be the team leader for this project, Sergeant?”
Xander shook his head. “Not if I can help it, sir, but I will if I have to until we have someone better suited to command. Mr. Chalmers has specified that the team will be no décor, meaning we check our rank at the door while on the job though someone will have to be our field command. All team members will use code name's in the field, which will probably be the nicknames we've picked up during our time in the forces and we'll be designated only as agents. So for simplicity sake, on the job I'll go by Agent Jaguar.”
“Jaguar?”The President asked curiously.
“Yes sir. My mother is Peruvian descent, and the Jaguar is the top predator in the jungles down there, and like my powers, they're known to appear out of nowhere. My first XO tagged me that early in my first tour in Iraq.” Xander explained proudly.
“Well chosen. Very well gentlemen, it seems you have everything in order. I don't think you need my blessing to continue in your endevor, but I'll authorize whatever you need. Best of luck, and good hunting.”
All three stood up and nodded,”Thank you, Mr. President.”and left the oval office.
