Background:
When contemplating war with Tolkien, the Coalition’s greatest fear was sending troops to face magic. Blessed with the Lone Star genetic labs, a nearly endless supply of loyal Dog Boy soldiers could be grown and sent into battle.
Then, the CS faced a reality check. Dogboys, while more than adequate against average soldiers and possessing advantages against mages, fell short against elite troops. During preliminary skirmishes before the outbreak of war, a company of Dogboys, led by psi-stalker and infantry officers, encountered a band of Wolven mercenaries. Unlike the primitive wolven of the Palladium world, these canines knew technology well, and used weapons near to what the CS possessed. Given superior tactics, training and discipline, the Wolven defeated the dogboys.
Survivors reported a highly disciplined enemy, with tactics equal to the best CS Army infantry brigade combat teams. They used combined arms, with armor, APC’s and air support to support their infantry. The CS was shocked. Immediately, the best of dog boys were used as spies and infiltrators, but not resembling wolves, they had little chance. Dr. Desmond Bradford evolved a few wild dogs into dogboys, and found wolves to be the most successful. They had a pack mentality, but were prone to challenging authority. Coyotes were generally even less reliable, preferring independence. For the most part, Bradford stuck to domestic dogs.
Faced with the threat of a superior canine army, Emperor Prosek himself demanded infiltrators capable of passing undetected among the enemy, observing activities, sabotaging equipment and assassinating Wolven leaders.
The few wolves among Dogboy ranks lacked the needed espionage training, so Bradford bred and cloned several wolves and a handful of coyotes to simulate the Coyle, humanoid coyotes. These Coyote anthromorphs could pass for small wolfen or their Coyle allies.
20 wolf cubs and 15 coyotes came from “Project Sirius.” All were female as Bradford reasoned females would be less likely to challenge a human leader for dominance of a “pack.” Each was given to dogboy “nannies,” female dogboys with a proven record of excellence in the field and for rearing loyal puppies. Each puppy was given a purpose, to be a loyal soldier and infiltrator. To them, it was all a great game. Their loyalty was ensured by a series of challenging tasks, and each had lessons that were fun and relevant.
After each puppy had the equivalent of basic training and advanced infantry training, they were sent to different schools. Some went to the ISS, some to Commando or Ranger school, others went to Naval SEAL training. She was fortunate and selected to attend Army Special Forces training, to be the elite soldier, with experience in espionage and advanced military arts.
She immediately volunteered to learn parachuting, and became an army parachutist. She next learned about D-bees, magic and monsters, knowing how to recognize different races, along with strengths and weaknesses. She learned about enemy military strengths, and finally, began studying other cultures, their rules and rituals, totems and talismans. She thought it important to blend in as a native.
In the mean time, she worked with a voice coach to learn to modify her accent, and behave like others. She learned the language of the Wolfen, then of Elves, to better fit in. Given some wolfen used medieval technology, she studied the bow and the sword. Swords became her weapon of choice. Combining it with her commando martial arts, she could use a sword in each hand. A bow became her versatile second choice.
She worked with normal high-tech weapons, the energy pistol and rifle to have maximum versatility and lethality potential. She learned how to live in the wilderness, off the wilderness. Then she studied the Wolfen and Coyles she would emulate. Coyles possessed great tactical skill, loving to lure enemies into traps. She learned first how to spot these traps, then how to set them, to better fit in among her enemy. She studied hunting, because she knew D-bee Canids placed hunting over all other skills. Lastly, she learned to build fortifications, with high-tech methods, and the low tech. Proving herself a strategic planner would ingratiate herself with Wolfen hosts.
Her final weapon was her strong code of honor. It made her more Wolfen than Coyle. Even if she was small by Wolven standards, any check of her aura would reveal her driven, committed and with a great code of honor.
Her own natural likability and trustworthiness made her a perfect spy.
Training ended around the end of the Tolkien war. Though some Wolven mercenaries were encountered, they were not the scourge they were expected to be. Small numbers of Wolven on Earth and Tolkien’s reliance on magic left little chance for Wolven mercenaries. She was a Coyote without a mission…
…Except, the war left the CS short of human troops, infantry, special forces and espionage experts. She was ideally trained as an infiltrator of an enemy that remained nebulous, but she was a great spy, a natural grifter, and a highly-trained warrior. Coyles presented danger in the west, and were beginning to be noted among Pecos bandits. Given the shortfall of special forces, she was seconded to joint special operations command, to teach two combat cats Elven, as well as any humans in the team that wished to learn. Her training makes her especially close to indigenous people, and she relates well to Indians, swamp tribes and the cultures of d-bees and enclaves in the burbs, including gangs and racial ghettos.
Interesting fact:
Being a coyote, she can be something of a scavenger. Her favorite meals include bones, cracking in to get the marrow. She loves bones of all sorts.
She also prefers dogpack riot armor because of its roman style. It resembles traditional Wolfen armor, and is one of the few armors on the continent to accommodate wearers with a tail. Given how many suits are made, and how many dogboys have been killed, ample suits are available for sale and salvage. She wears her swords over her shoulders, and cuts a rakish look.
Hobbies:
She loves hunting small game. Anything from squirrels and hares to goats. A fantastic stalker, she will follow an appetizing scent for miles before taking it with her bow, or charging out and mauling with teeth. Perhaps strangely, Nike has a fascination with watches of all sorts, and likes to collect them, especially ones with unusual pictures or designs on them.
