( Celerity's background and such. Please excuse grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Was written in semi-rough format in Notepad, which lacks a spell-checker.)
Rough Background Grandparents are a hero and a reformed villain; both still had enemies. Parents were latent mutants but never developed powers. All four died in an 'accident' (actually an assassination by enemies of Siobhan's grandparents) while on a skiing vacation, leaving young (2 year old) Siobhan orphaned; she had been staying with friends of her parents while they were away, the friends were willing to continue to look after her, but the state decided that adoption by strangers was "the better solution".
Less than six months later she was adopted by an inter-racial couple, Akhuri Tsuchiyama (male) and Karen Grey-Tsuchiyama (female) who had moved into the area a year earlier after Akhiro had immigrated to the US from the city of Sapporo (in the Hokkaido district). The pair had actually met in Japan, when Karen was there as an exchange-teacher for several years.
The two had fallen in love and married, but were having difficulty concieving and so decided to go the adoption route.
Both were teachers, Akhiro an instructor of Oriental Culture and Kiniseology at the local university, while Karen returned to her job as a science teacher at one of the local high school. Both took pride in their education and wanted to raise their new daughter in the same manner; the best education they could afford, tutored by themselves and scholarly friends where appropriate.
As such, Siobhan had an excellent education growing up, excelling in scholarly subjects as well as physical: indeed, in her early teens she was an accomplished gymnist, and a friend of her fathers had been teaching her the intricities of Choy-li-fut kung fur since the age of 5. Showing remarkable intelligence, Siobhan quickly picked up several oriental languages (being helped with a lot of exposure to it!) and an appreciation for the culture of both parents homelands.
Sadly, things went south around the time when she turned 15. Both parents died in an accident; an actual accident this time. Heart-broken, traumatized by this event, and going through the harshness of growing up at the same time, left Siobhan alternately despondant and enraged. To make matters worse, she was sent back to an orphanage. Not the kindly orhanage she was in as a baby, though, but one where abuses were quietly rampant.
Only willing to take so much, the teen eventually broke out and ran away, taking to the streets quickly. There, she fell in with a gang (partly consensual, partly not) - not the best sort of living conditions but, to her mind at least, better than the orphanage-hell she was in before. Although she didnt really enjoy her time there, it let her deal with her anger and grief at least somewhat. Unfortunately, she also turned to crime (petty and not), drugs and alcohol and the like.
Two years she lived in this situation, although she wasn't fully aware of the passage of time, numb with her grief and the influence of drugs and alcohol. What finally drew her out of this, however, was a frightening incident that nearly landed her in jail, or worse. The gang leader, who had taken a dislike to Siobhan after she rebuffed his advances several times, port forth a plan where she and several others would raid a nearby medical clinic for drugs and other supplies. Risky, dangerous but, the leader claimed, potential for a lot of reward. What he didnt say, is that it was a set-up, to get rid of those that he felt were disloyal or 'baggage'.
The raid seemed to go off without a hitch; it was late at night, and the clinic was closed, empty aside from a security guard that they subdued. However, the gang leader had quietly, anonymously alerted the police department of what was happening, and shortly after the half-dozen gang members had broken into the building, they were being stalked by SWAT members. Desperate, they grabbed what they could and fled in all directions.
Siobhan had the misfortune of grabbing several vials of an experimental chemical - little did she know, but the clinic also held a laboratory that did chermical/pharmaceutical research.
Unfortunately, the young woman misread the labels on the vials, and thought she had grabbed a vaccine for children.
Having managed to break out from the Clinic, Siobhan ducked down an ally, pursued by a couple of uniformed cops at a distance. Scared witless, she decided to try and bluff her way out... bit disposing of the evidence.
Quickly, and very foolishly, she downed the liquid contained in the vials, and almost immediately doubled over as pain overcame her. As the police approached to detain her, however, things seemed to slow down, as if in slow-motion. Reacting on instinct, she fled once again, easily evading what seemed like clumsy attempts to grab her. Little did she know, but the experimental chemicals has triggered the latent mutant genes within her, passed down through several generations; the change has nearly instantaneous, her body having already developed the biology for her new abilities, they had just needed to "wake up", as it were.
It only took a minute or so for her to realize that she was traveling and moving a lot faster than she ever had been, even during track and field back in school. Signs and cars were passing in a blur, but she kept going until she was 'home', back at the gangs hideout. Still in shock, she barely noticed when she was confronted by the gang-leader and his cronies, who decided to take matters into their own hands. The pain of being punched in the gut snapped her out of the shock, at least temporarily, and she fought back... but even with her enhanced speed and agility backed by her martial arts training, she was overwhelmed by the dozen cruel young men.
Facing death, struggling desperatly, Siobhan unconciously triggered another power, sending powerful vibrations through the molecular struction of the old wooden building around her; within moments, the ceiling, walls and floor were crumbling, collapsing around them. Startled, most of the gangers fled, releasing her, although few of them escaped the collapsing building. Siobhan herself leveled the gang leader with a powerkick, augmented by her new power of speed, before fleeing herself.
Confused, angry and terrified the young woman ran and ran, the use of her new-found power of speed slowly wearing her out; collapsing in a darkened park beneath a tree, she remained unconcious until morning. Waking to the sounds of nearby vehicles and the bright light of the sun in her eyes, Siobhan groggily rose, looking around nervously. To her shock and surprise, she had collapsed the previous night in the park she spent many hours in as a child, across the street from the home where she was raised by her parents.
Staring at the old home, which had remained somewhat unchanged from when she had left it several years earlier, the distraught teen came to the realization that she had dishonored her loving parents with all she had done recently. Feeling emotionally wrenched, Siobhan quietly vowed, to herself and her parents, that she'd clean up her act and get off the street.
Although it was difficult, with a lot of setbacks, awkward moments and even a few moments of weakness, Siobhan did manage to pull herself together. Gathering up her few belongings, the teen managed to find relatively honest work (first in a mom&pop convience store, then later a diner, and finally a book store) and occasionally some dishonest work, as well as a place to stay (a rather ratty, run down apartment in the downtown area). At first, she wasn't sure what she wanted to do with herself... her new powers both awed Siobhan and terrified her at the same time; although she believed it was the strange drug she'd consumed in a panic, what she didn't realize was that the experimental chemicals merely triggered her latent mutant gene. This would, however, be revealed later.
Eventually, Siobhan decided that education would be her path. Both of her parents had been teachers.. and while she didnt feel she had the patience for that, the young woman felt that she had to do something, settling on enrolling at the local college for general education, at least to start. Later, she transfered her credits towards a Chemical Engineering degree, which she is still trying to get!
Life, however, refused to settle down for Siobhan. Her newfound powers were always there... she had to conciously be careful not to use them, at least openly. Quietly, at night or away from the public she continued to experiment with them... she found that in addition to ridiculous speeds she'd also obtained an amazing amount of agility, her joints limber and muscles supple but strong. Most frightening, and exhilirating, however, was her ability to control and manipulate vibrations. Although wary at first, she came to realize that she could create small 'earthquakes', of a sort, in an area around her by focusing on it; later she was able to focus this power more accutely, allowing her to actually send out pulses of vibration in a sort of blast, capable of damaging event concerete and metal. Lastly, this ability to control and manipulate vibrations and airflow gave her an enhanced sense around her of movement and even the seismic effects of footsteps.. no one could sneak up on her, and of course it greatly helped her ability to play sports!
Siobhan didnt consider herself "hero" material.. or even "vigalante" material for that matter. Despite her vow to clean up her act, she remained inately rebellious, particularly towards authority, and while she had given up *heavy* drug use and alcohol abuse, she continued to be 'that punk girl', often getting into trouble. Thus, it came as rather a surprise to her w hen she *did* become a hero, at least of a sort.
Siobhan had been at the bank, depositing her meager paycheque into her even more meager savings account when the thieves struck. A group of men burst in, masked and armed, demanding money and threatening violence. The banks rent-a-cops proved far more cowardly than effective, fleeing and leaving the employees and customers to fend for themselves. Furious at this, Siobhan acted without thinking about it, using her speed, control of vibration and martial arts training to stop the four miscreants.
What Siobhan didn't know about these villains, is that they were members of a terrorist cell, and that the robbery was partly to fund their activities, but also partly to test a new bio-terror agent. In stopping them, the young heroine garnered the attention of the secretive Sentinels of Liberty and Justice, a US government sponsored super-hero group. Although they did not contact her at first, they spent some time observing her and studying her records indepth, as only the government can do. Eventually, despite her rebellious personality and criminal record, it was decided that her powers and abilities were just too valuable, especially with the increase of super-powered villains.
Patriot, leader of the Sentinels, approached her with an offer to join them in completing a mission, knowing that her powers would be useful, if not essential. Although beyond nervous, even frightened, of what was going on Siobhan agreeded to help, hoping that it would help make up for the ill she had done in her past. The mission ended up being successful, with Siobhan proving herself at a critical point; unfortunately, she did end up injured on the mission, sufficient enough that she had to spend some time recovering. During this recovery time she found out that she was being transfered to a local branch of the Sentinels, based in her home town of Miami.
~~~~~~ Siobhan was raised to be somewhat proper, at least as far as 21st century proper goes. Polite, good natured and gregarious, she was well-liked among her peers and friends of the family alike. Unfortuntely the death of her parents hurt her deeply, left her angry and somewhat bitter, two traits that she is only now starting to let go, albiet slowly. Much of her polite friendlyness was lost as she spent several years living on the streets, as it were, surrounded by gangs, the poor and homeless. Now, the young woman tends more towards rebelliousness, prickly and even a little brittle sometimes. Quick to anger and impatient. Thats not to say that she is always this way, or generally unfriendly; since cleaning up her life (somewhat) she's become more friendly than she had been. But the fire is still there within, and it can rear its head suddenly and unexpectedly.
Intelligent, world-wise and fairly well educated. Siobhan certainly has the potential to be a solid addition to the SLJ Miami-branch. What she needs to learn is patience, composure and restraint for the most part, along with a little more self-confidence. Not to mention shaking her issues with alcohol and drugs; although not as serious as it was in the past, she still has an attraction to the bottle, and sometimes "feels the need" to let go with 'party drugs', rather than anything truely hard. It is the hope of the SLJ that the responsibilities put on her by being a member of the team will help straighten her out further, lead her back to a more scrupulous path.
Dislikes: tofu, dogs, non-shellfish seafood, Tampa Bay Lighting, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coke over pepsi, walnuts, baseball, Seinfeld (but likes Jason Alexander), five-oh, vodka, american beer, rap/hip-hop music, country music (but likes cowboys ). Does have some minor racist elements.
~~~~ General Appearance Siobhan/Celerity is fairly small, a little over five feet in height and maybe 120 lbs total weight. Slim yet curvy, although not heavily endowed, although her petite form belies a surprising amount of strength and endurance... "Stronger than she looks" is an apt description for the martial-arts trained woman.
Golden blonde hair falls not quite tp her shoulders, often appearing tousselled and with longer silky wisps framing her lovely visage. Solid dark green eyes that lack sclera or pupil, similar in hue to emeralds, peer out from behind normally dark-lined sockets (black or purple/indigo being most common), allowing them to stand out from her pale flesh.
Siobhan has a love of piercings and tattoos, and sports a variety of them across her body; "I'm a canvas for these artists!" she's been heard to say, showing off the mostly custom ink. Across her upper chest, above her pert breasts and following the line of her collar-bone, is a wing-like image of vines and flowers in green and purple. Her right arm bares a sleeve, the upper portion being coiling vines and red flowers, while the forearm sports a coiling dragon in black and red. Surrounding her pierced navel is a stylized black widow spider - the piercing (a silver pin with a ruby pinhead) works into the spider image prefectly. Finally, following the length of her spine is a coiled set of vines, in various shades of green, with wicked bloody thorns.
As for piercings, Siobhan isn't as decorated as some of her former friends, but she does sport more than the average person. Most noticable is her septum ring, usually a curved barbell or captive bead ring of stainless steel, occasionally with colored beads. Immediately below that is a medusa stud, almost always stainless steel.
Each ear sports multiple decorations, three on the left ear and four on the right; these usually vary in style. Less obvious, but seen when wearing a bikini or cutoff, is the previously mentioned naval piercing which is always a silver pin with a ruby pinhead.
Regarding other decorations, Siobhan has a like of jewelry, usually sporting several decorative rings and bracelets in various styles. Perhaps oddly, she avoids wearing necklaces or chains, but does like to wear collars or chokers. The young woman has an aversion to makeup however, aside from eyeliner and nail-polish; her skin is naturally silken and free of blemish, so she rarely finds need to wear anything more.
Siobhan prefers to dress comfortably, with a preference towards loose jeans or cargos, extra-large tshirts or mens button-up shirts beeing most common; these tend to be in darker colors, black or reds, purples and greens with black being by far the most common.
However, she'll often surprise people with something entirely differant, like a baby-tee or sleeveless halter, tight shorts or even a skirt. Going in hand with her innate rebelliousness and aversion to authority, Siobhan dislikes uniforms, and if pressed will wear to the minumum standards.
