Tori heard a click and a sizzle behind her. She took a look back to see Sneaker frying one of the rats. While out here, it might be best to conserve ammo, she couldn't blame the coyote for returning the favor onto the rats. Glad to see it wasn't Six getting schwacked by a sniper, Tori continued towards the burning huts.

As usual, Shep's helmet was off quickly. He looked at the two corpses and finally said," We still gotta go check, make sure one way or the other before we head to the next one."

" Of course we'll go to the villages." Martin said ." We rally survivors, remove stragglers, and hope we get ahead of the wave. And if not, we go around it. Around here, common sense prevails. Always. Hustle folks."
"they won't get more dead, Nike. We need your nose, right now."
And he continued on his way to the first village.

Tori had already discarded the bodies like trash and was moving on towards the hamlet. She looked back at Shep who had his helmet off again. "We will, Shep," Tori said with a gentle voice.
"I don't see 'er hear nothin' ahead or feel like there's anyone up there, but there's still a right good chance of an ambush, snipers or a booby trap." Tori's voice was almost a whisper, but still could be heard by the team. She knew what everyone was thinking. They were too late. Two rats paid for their arrogance. Plenty more would follow. Her grim demeanor shined in her body language. Killing innocent humans or felines pissed her off, especially if the culprits were rodents.
Without another word, she turned and resumed her stalk to the burning hut.

Once the cats had stowed the ion rifles (K-30's) and the three spare e-clips, they also found a few personal items, a couple unopened CS issue ration bars and crude knife made from a dinosaur tooth (1d4sdc).
"Allright, get the bodies off the trail and we get moving." Shep said as his helmet slipped back on. " And hope the smell of barbeque doesn't draw company."
No ambush came. Instead as they entered into the clearing they found three huts burning. The only signs of life was a small raptor like dinosaur feeding on a corpse in the one doorway, before scampering off with a squawk as the team approached.

Nike's normally stoic expression goes all the more grim as she takes in the carnage. Ears flattening, she stalks forward, heedless of potential ambush, moving to check on the bodies.. to see any of them were friends. As she moves forward, she slings her rifle back over her shoulder, then pulls off her gloves and tucks them into her belt.

Tori didn't know the victims, but could tell Nike and probably Martin did. She concentrated on her hearing to see if any sounds of life could be heard within the burning buildings. She also listened to see if she could hear anything alive, rat or not, beyond the hooches. If she heard any wounded, any movement beyond fire. Any groan or gasp, she would enter the building and carry the victim to safety or come to his side and provide treatment.
She doubted anyone lived through the massacre, though. Mostly she watched the perimeter for any signs of trouble, and waited for orders. What bodies she could readily reach, she checked for signs of life.
"Six? Think we got time fer a burial detail?" She doubted it, but the people who lived here deserved it. If not now, then maybe after the rats were killed. "We could still maybe save some lives in the other hooches, iffen we hurry, though."

Janxi looked back to Nike as she shot the corpse, then to Martin as he admonished her. "Fox 'em," she muttered as she looked down at the rat bodies. She turned without another word and followed Tori to the burning hooch before stomping her foot in the general direction of the retreating scavenger.
"Git..." she hissed with a low and moaning growl.
She began to study tracks around the hut to determine how many people were inside, if the two rats did all the wet work or if there were more, how many and which way they went. She looked for survivor tracks, of any that escaped unscathed noting their direction of travel. Like Tori, she worried about ambush. Finding a track could give the cats a jump on ambushers. She listened for survivors hiding beyond the perimeter or rats leaving the area or laying in ambush. She really hoped to find a couple more to decapitate.
"Yeah, mebbe we oughta hurry..."

Sam looks sombre as she takes in the scene before her, glad that Shep put his helmet back on before she'd had to order him to do it. Sam briefly considers Tori's question in regards to burial services and then shakes her head, "No, we need to keep moving. Later, perhaps, if we can, we'll come back." Looking at the team, Sam says, "Let's move people, double time." 'Hopefully we can get there in time to help some of the villagers' Sam thinks to herself as the team starts to move out again.

A quick look around told that the rats had hit with a much larger force some time ago. From the looks of the fallen, the two rats on the trail were stragglers collecting trophies. There were no signs of anything alive except scavengers.
Shep suggested," Captain, only a half dozen or so bodies here. We can't bury them, but they deserve better than to be carrion. Suggest we collect them quickly and torch one of the buildings and cremate them. Rats left the place burning, so whats a little more smoke? We can be on the go in 15 minutes."

"I would rather we go now." Martin said, bluntly. "They would be touched by your concern, but there's an army of attackers. We fuss over these bodies, we will end up fussing over still more down the road. We can honor their sacrifice by getting ahead f the attackers."
Martin was already edging towards the next village.

Sam considers Shep's comment and then shakes her head. "I agree with Martin. We need to get moving. We can come back and take care of that later." Sam then starts to follow Martin, expecting the others to follow her without further argument.

"Aye aye, Six. We're oscar mike." Six was right. A lot could happen in 15 minutes. They might be too late already, but there was nothing more that could be done for the dead. The living, if there were any left, could still be warned and survived. She gave Martin, already on the path, a slightly queer look and took her place at point without another word.

Shep merely nodded as he fell back in line while the squad started moving again. for 45 minutes, they travelled silenty through along the swamp trail. The trek was interrupted by a loud shriek up ahead, "DADDDY! HELP! RATS!"
Then all hell broke loose, with energy blasts flying back and forth across the path, with most of it coming from the left of the trail while three or four returned fire from the right.
Martin and Nike both knew the right side was the homes they were looking for.

Without thinking, Martin signaled to target the left, and laid out suppression fire with the p-beam cannon while the others moved to a firing position.
