Bio:
Born the son of a Swedish and a Ukrainian, Oleksandr grew up in the back room of his parents bakery on the east side of Central City with his older sister Natalia until they were old enough to start helping. Lex became the errand and delivery boy, running bake goods all over the east side. One day, curiosity got the better of him. Father's packages were always much heavier, and the envelope he brought back was much thicker. Stopping in an alleyway, he opened the box and peered inside. To his shock, beneath mother's sticky bread was a gun! Lex closed up the box and delivered it, somehow keeping his terror to himself. That evening when father was tucking him in, he confessed. Nicholas Gunner looked disappointed, but merely nodded. “ After school, come to the basement and I will explain.”
Lex did as he was told, and his father showed him his secret. Behind the storeroom was another room, hidden away that no one would notice. Inside, Lex looked around wide eyed at his father's secret gunsmith shop hidden beneath the streets of Central City. Lex swallowed and asked his father if he could learn to be a gunsmith. His father nodded and Lex began his road to what would become his trade at nine years old.
By seventeen, working downstairs as much as up, Lex had come into his own. He was starting to modify designs to make improvements, which he would test in the country at a small cabin they used during hunting season. While testing his latest bow, Nicholas patted his son on the shoulder, “You won't learn any more from me. It's time you hone your skills on your own.” Lex nodded, and he packed his things when he got home and set out on his own
For a year he wandered trying to find his place until he caught wind of something crazy drawing men like flies. Lex spent two miserable years in the Klondike, and found just enough gold for what he thought was worth it. But when he cashed it in, his eyes went wide with excitement and he wished he hadn't sold his claim. He moved south to California the rush going on there, but it was a different environment. While there though, he saw the need for someone with his skills, or rather, his father's skills. He spent the last of his gold money to buy the start up equipment he needed. Another two years there and he was ready to move on again, building up his earnings modestly. And so it went on, returning home each fall for hunting season with his father. But things changed when war erupted in Europe.
Lex had no interest in the army, but his father's influence about a homeland Lex had never seen convinced him to do his part. It didn't take long for him to wish he hadn't. The violence of war and seeing many friends wounded or killed was unlike anything he had imagined. But his biggest beef was the garbage they had handed him and called it a rifle. Before long, his gunsmith was plying his trade for the men of his squad. He soon earned the nickname Lex the Gun and caught the eye of one member of his squad. Joey Loughman convinced Lex as the war ended that he had a real job for him when they got back to the states waiting for him in Windy City.
That job introduced Lex to the underworld of the Mafia. He was making and modifying weapons in a shop for the Mancuso family. His new shop was top rate and Lex enjoyed the lifestyle. But he soon got a taste of the violence with a near miss when a rival family nearly blew him up when a bomb was in the diner he and Joey had just left. And to make matters worse, a call from home that his brother-in-law had been killed during a drive by back in Central City. He broke ties with the Mancuso's after packing a delivery truck full of his shop gear and headed home.
When he got there, he was appalled that the police were doing nothing. Setting up in his dad's old workshop beneath the family bakery, he decided to take matters into his own hands. With a few of his own “special”designs no one had ever seen, he bore a mask and decided to make a difference on his own. The newsies slapped his alter-ego with the name Steel Fist because his costume incorporated parts of a suit of chain mail armor, though only the vambraces were recognizable. Everything was going well, until he caught an intruder in his sanctum.
When Lex caught Vivian inside his workshop, he wasn't sure what to do. He listened to the girl's story out of the fact that she had him cornered. He wanted to send her on her way, but she knew his secret and that made her a liability not only to him, but his sister's family. And they had a connection, their shared love of archery. Lex enjoyed it since he was a child hunting with his father, but his skill was nowhere near Vivian's gift with a bow. As an attempt to bribe her, he offered her one of his greatest achievements, a bow that he had intended to give his father before he passed away and never had the chance.
Their shared time and Vivian's prompting soon led Lex to teach her his self taught ways on the street. He wouldn't admit it, but he knew he couldn't do it alone, and he began to train her. Their close working relationship soon led Lex seeing Vivian as family while her affect led him away from his original violent approach to crime fighting. It makes him a little overprotective by times, but he hopes she knows he means well.
