"Most basically," Socrates began, "do you speak or understand basic military sign language, or any kind of gesture language? In the field, the most critical communications are not spoken but gestured succinctly, so we need to know it won't be a problem."
The irony of asking a mute if be understood or spoke signs was not lost on Socrates, but pointing at boats with feet and looking bored hardly seemed the level of "warning, enemy ahead, keep low."
"Second, what do you do for masking your scent, in this environment?"

Janxi looked up at Socrates and nodded her head slightly. She figured Jin knew his head from his ass. He might not know military signs, but could at least understand basic gestures and offer a few of his own. She knew Ella would never recommend him if he couldn't keep up with operators.
She removed her side-arm and pistol belt, having one other backup. Gravely, she passed it to Jin, holster, e-clips and all. "And third, can ya use one-a these? That bow's well n' good for deer huntin, but we run into a dino or a Splooge, it ain't gonna do much more than piss 'em off. Any fireworks on the arrow's gonna sound like a boom gun out here, and we gots ta be sneaky.
"There ain't much range on this here Dirty Harry model, but you tag yer target wif more energy than Six's rifle with a single shot. Use it ju-dish-ishly, cuz there ain't many shots in the tank, and only when you and the rest-uf-us gotta. Lemmie make one more thing clear. This here's got sent-mental value to me, so it's a loaner. I'm loanin' it to ya so you'll make it back a-live and give 'er back to me, savvy? You don't want it? You can't use it? No hard feelins' on my part."

Hands gave a thumbs up," Dries on contact with other metal. You are fixed."
Jin nodded to Socrates and gave a proper heads up signal before looking at Janxi as he unslung his bow. Both the arrow he drew and the bowstring glistened like the sap Hands had used to patch the airboat. He notched the arrow and let it fly towards a large tree on the opposite bank, and the arrow cut through it like a knife threw warm butter and continued into the swamp. Smiling, the swamper reslung his bow, then waved off Janxi's pistol. He held up another arrow, pointing to the tip and then making an explosion motion with his hands while smiling.
Shep smirked as he stepped aboard, and showed his knack for reading his people as he gave Tori a slight chin scratch," Those two will be fine. Worry more about us." He looked at Sam, " Looks like we're good to go, bosslady."

"Hoo-foxin'ya, Jin. I think you got whatcha need. Let's do some good!"
Tori gave Janx a warm nuzzle and fired the engine. "My only reservation is we ain't got no mech no more. But at least Eve's runnin' at full purr."

Sam watches as Jin signs for Socrates, answering his questions and nods. 'he should do all right' she thinks to herself. Turning to Shelp, she nods and says, "Let's get moving then." Turning to Richardson and Autumn, she says, "Stay safe and don't do anything stupid." Sam then heads to the boat and gets on, hoping they'll get moving quickly.

Socrates watched the display with his usual thirst for knowledge. The CS never mentioned the use of such sap before, and it was becoming apparant that was a little thoughtless.
In the meantime, however, they had to kill rats and find family, so Socrates climbed aboard with his gear, as well.

Jan shrugged and strapped her pistol back on. "You don need none o' mah help no how. Glad ya got tha right tool for tha job."
She looked at Tori, then at Sam. "Standin' by..."

"We'll make do," Shep said, then grinned as he looked at his helmet," don't know about Marines, but that's what Rangers do." He groaned, then slid his bucket on.
Jin gave a wave to a small group of onlookers, then made himself as comfortable as possible

Socrates sat low and closer to the front of the boat, his helmet on, but open, so he can smell what's around him while they travel. The dog-boy held the rifle on his lap in case it was needed.

Tori fired up the engine. "Alright. All aboard that's comin' aboard!" She gave the throttle a goosing to clean out the carburetor, forcing the engine to emit a puff of blue-grey smoke.
"Hell Shep... Make do? Marines usually wear CA-1, cuz shark-suits are in short supply. They get old Spider Skulls and Enforcers, while Army gets the sleek skull suits, IAR-4's and Scorpion Walkers. Navy and Marines tote our sorry butts around in pre-Rifts ships, while y'all gots Death Heads. I think we know 'bout makin' do."
When Janx cast off the line, Tori hit the throttle softly, giving a slow pass out of the Marlin village with a wave. As she rounded the bend out of sight, she throttled up, with a roughly southern heading.
"Six, unless you tell me otherwise, we're headin' south."

"Yeah. I thought the mottoes were 'Rangers lead the way' and 'Marines make do.' Guess that weren't in my NCO training..."
She cast off on Tori's order, secured the line and took her customary seat at the prow of the boat. If she saw a target, as a trained observer and a scout sniper, she would take it down quickly. Marines may make do, but they had a hell of a big time doing it. Plundering a rat camp was just about her favorite activity of all.

"Hey Socrates?" she pronounced his full name like "Soccer-Tease."
"They didn't teach you none about yer unit during training? Like the Marines and the Navy go all the way back to the founding of the American Empire. 'Merican Navy captured ships from England, while the Marines started in a tavern and fought pirates near Africa which is what the Navy and Corps did for a lot of their history. The CS Navy and Naval Infantry take their customs and traditions from the Navy and Marines from back then, like the Skull Globe and Anchor for the marines, our Eight-Point caps and even our war cries.
"The Army's battlecry goes back to the American Army. It's good to yell when goin into battle, when victorious and just to acknowledge instruction. The 'Merican army lost wars cuz politicians didn't let them win, but I learnt that rarely if ever did they leave a battle without victory and always inflicted more casualties than they suffered on their side. They fought the same English the Navy did to ensure survival of the nation. That's just like Deadboys fought off a siege of monsters to make sure the CS survived. So when you say 'Hooah!' yer not only motivatin' yerself, but you're givin' the same battlecry soldiers have shouted in victory for hundreds of years. Sound off with pride. Human, Canine or Feline, that's a better war cry than 'git off yer mangy ass,' and somethin' to be proud of."
She wasn't telling this to Socrates to be condescending or to show him up. She had little love of the CS, and realized she was just a slightly smarter, quicker and fuzzier skelebot, and just government property, but she loved the Navy, just as Janxi loved the Marines. She hadn't heard Sam, Shep or Soc sound off with the Army battlecry. Maybe they didn't know it, but by the grace of God, if there was one, the Army, Navy and Marines had a tradition. She would make sure the three soldiers knew of it, and believed in themselves, their service and their mission.

"I was only comparing the phrases people use to describe their units." Socrates answered, watching the river as it moved passed by them.

"Hell, Soc, we're bitchin' 'bout 'Marines make do,' but Tori's right about our real motto comin' from hist-ry. It's 'Semper Fi!' and that means 'Always Ready.' Tori'll tell ya 'The only easy day was yesterday.' Ya got any mottoes or traditions from your unit?"
Janxi cracked open the upper "sleeve" of her armor, and rolled up her T-shirt, to reveal a double-lightning bolt branded into her left bicep. She didn't know it, but it was once the symbol of her beloved Corps' enemy, the one that named them "The Devildogs." It was a German symbol denoting the Waffen SS, from the war after the Belleau Wood campaign, but Marines adopted it, and wore it proudly.
"See this here? It hurt, sure, but it marks me as a Scout Sniper in the Corps. We're tha elite of tha elite. And it's just another tradition we carry on today. From Carlos Hathcock to Cpl. Janxi.
"One Shot, From an unknown spot, One kill, Because of my skill.
"Oorah!"
