"Yes Dad. And ya'd do well to remember I'm a sailor, not a soldier, and I sure as hell ain't your sub-board-nate," she said to Socrates before shooting him the bird. None of the items she offered would be seriously missed, and as it turned out, goodwill was all that was needed to seal the deal.
Calling a SEAL or a Marine "soldier" was a mild insult. Speaking to a fellow E-4 in a demeaning way was a serious insult. Again, she'd let it ride.
"Ella, Hands, I'm Tori, SO-3, CS Navy... Thanks fer offerin up the sap. Jan's right that we gotta get Six to agree to that, but I'm wif Duffy and will gladly commit to leavin 'em all dead as long as it don't compromise th' mission or nuttin. But yeah, I'm right glad to be gittin' Evie fixed."

Sam nods at Shep and says, "Thank you for telling me. I won't say anything to anyone until the time is right. Don't worry." Sam's face is cold. "I can keep a secret too." Sam then quietly heads toward the boat where the cats and Socrates are to see what is going on.

Tori looked up at Six as she came out to check on the boat. She excused herself from Hands and Ella and went to her captain.
"Boat's got a crack in the hull. Probably took it in the battle. The Marlins got some miracle sap they can mend it with. Their deal is they want us to send them proof of every rat we take down. I ain't committed to nuthin', but unless we got a spare boat, we're gonna be walkin' without it," said Tori in a quiet voice to Capt'n Sam.

Sam listens to Tori and then nods and says, "I don't have a problem with that."

Tori looked straight into Six's eyes with her yellow orbs as her vertical pupils contracted from the order. She then gave her commander a nod. "Aye-aye, Six. Makin' it so."
She looked over at Janxi and began to purr. "Looks like you 'n me's gonna be huntin' sum rodents. Scalps and ears oughtta be all the proof we need. Hooya!
"Miss Ella, Six's down. For the price of some sap and a boat fix, ya just hired some of tha sickest ratkillers ya'd ever wanna see. 'Fore we leave Florida, we'll show ya our r'port cards. Life-takers and heartbreakers."

Shep had followed Sam, and listened to Tori's report, and anyone looking could see him squirm a bit. "Proof? Captain, I'll agree to alot of things, but I'm not big on taking trophies. We're soldiers, not butchers."
Ella looked at Sam as if waiting for a decision.

Tori looked at Sam just as expectantly. The cats already were trophy hunters. She did not consider rat ears and scalps to be much of a trophy, but if it meant sap for the boat, she was more than willing to collaborate.
"They're jus rats, Six. You want cubs like Nala and Brea growin' up under siege? We're doin' them a favor."

"We are employed by the CS, Shep." Socrates said, rather suddenly. "You have to agree that the line is rather fine between the two."
[modified for a second thought of additional text]
"What about a witness, instead of lugging around body parts?" He asked Sam, considering a possible compromise. "Surely they can report back on our exploits for this secondary objective, and make sure we don't get lost carrying out the primary one, at the same time."

Sam looks at Ella and asks her, "Is that an acceptable compromise?"
Assuming Ella says this is acceptable, Sam will nod and say, "Then we have a deal." If Ella indicates she does not like that alternative, Sam will do the same thing. They needed to get this mission finished and Sam would not be held up on little details such as this.

Ella thought for a moment. " An observer would be fine , and I have a person in mind. I have to talk to Jin first, but I think he will come. When do you intend to leave?"
Shep sighed a bit. " I have no problem taking down every rat we cross paths with, but junking off a piece to prove it is stupid. Deer antlers, or your raptor claws are different, those you earn or remind you of something. Taking a toe or ear off someone you just blew away, nah that just disgusting."

Sam simply nods at Shep and says, "Your objections are noted." Turning back to Ella, Sam replies, "I'd like to leave once the repairs to the boat have been completed. Assuming Jin is fine with coming along with us, how long will the repairs take?"

Janxi nodded. "You go askin' any hunter, Six. A local guide's the key. This'izza good move after all. 'Sides, once we've done did the mission, we kin call for extract and get out this here swamp, wifout havin' to come back to the Marlin's. Not that we wouldn't mind seein' little Brea again and enjoyin' yer hospitality, but usually when we leave, we got a buncha pissed off hornets hollerin' fer our blood."
She looked over to Ella and nodded. "Could me and Tori meet wif yer man Jin? We'd like to compare notes and see what kinda skills and equipment he's packin.'"

Sam smirks at Janxi as she nods, "That is the truth more often than not. That's a good idea." She then waits for Ella to answer her question about how long the repairs to the boat will take.

Socrates didn't keep score on his suggestion, but was happy it circumvented even more problems with cohesion.
Like Shep, he was not fond of such antics on the dead. The least appealing commander revelled in receiving such DNA evidence. Unlike Shep, though, he knew how toes, ears and teeth could be used to forge such kills.
He had no doubt the cats would be totally honest in their trophies. However, the guide served the purpose, without questioning the cats' intentions, and had added benefits.
One day, though, he would ask if the cats knew how the rats first arrived in a fortress like Lonetar. All the variety of stories always sounde more like cover ups of someone's lackluster planning.

Ella points towards Hands, who was rubbing the crack with a sponge full of the sap, " Done. It needs about an hour to set.. She turned towards Janxi, " Give me time to talk to Jin first, then I will send him over for introductions. He is always pre packed. If you'll excuse me." Ella left.
"Why am I getting a bad feeling about this?" shep asked, watching Ella leave.
