The mental training and education differs from the meditation training in that it is more like standard education courses. Although Tiger's history is mostly about wars, and her math is often creative problem solving. The book list is wide ranging and includes all kinds of subjects, even lots of fiction titles.

Roan also starts the kids on riddles, questions and tests. The trials will no doubt test mental aptitude, so all the standard educational tests are employed, plus riddle contests and a couple more interesting tests.
For some of the tests, Roan messes with their heads by making the object of the test something else in the room besides what is on the paper. For example she gives them permanent markers for one test with variable answers, and she leaves pencils on a shelf. The object of the test being to measure how long it takes them to ditch the markers and grab a pencil.
There are also flight simulators, and occasionally Tiger stops her role to see if they figure out that the pilot or navigator is no longer responding or if they crash.

Dante monitors their thoughts as they perform the tasks that Roan and Tiger laid out for the students. He doesn't really give them to many at first, content to observe the amount of focus they have on each task.

Dante quickly figures out that Dancer is a genius, with an IQ over 200 (IQ 21), but she has merely average mental endurance. She has good study habits, though she can be a bit flighty she compensates by being super smart.
Rock is about the opposite, a normal guy intelligence wise with a will of steel. He tends to stay on the same track for far too long, not switching gears fast enough.
Peacemaker isn't as smart as Dancer, but she is quite the genius too and its easy to forget she dropped out of school years ago. Her focus very good, though nowhere near Rock's superhuman level. She is cunning and creative.
