For many years, I villainized him as "Captain America." He was the man that took fantastic anime, americanized it, and dumbed it down for a younger and less sophisticated audience.
He took something like "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" and merged it with Millieneum Queen to get Capt. Harlock and the Queen of 1000 years. The show was awesome, but I was so lost.
As an adult, I compared Robotech to SDF: Macross. It was a child's morning show vs. a serial for adults. No contest there.
Then I realized that Macek was the one who brought me Robotech as a kid, and made me love it even 26 years later. That without "1000 years" I'd have little clue who Harlock is, and never would have sought "The Arcadia of My Youth" and "Galaxy Express 999." Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto's "Interstella 5555" might have meant nothing to me. Macross Plus would not have me on the edge of my seat, even for the 50th viewing.
In short, agree or disagree with his vision, Carl Macek made pretty much all of us anime fans. And without being a Robotech junkie, I never would have played a single Palladium game.
Albatross, you are exactly right. It's a sad day indeed.
