Bio:
Alex never knew anything was different about his family and friends while he was growing up. In fact, he was expected to be the third generation of the Gunnar family to work and eventually take over the family bakery, an establishment that had taken on a life of it’s own since the end of the Depression. Alex wanted no part of it however, and instead wanted to be like his uncles, Oleksandr Gunnar who serve in the trenches of Europe or even better, like Jakob Wagner, and become a pilot. The problem was simple, the army would never take a twisted up young man like Alex.
When he was born, Alex’ mother was told he would never be like other children. Through sheer determination and patience from family and close friends, Alex proved the doctors wrong by learning to walk despite a severe curvature of his spine. Uncle Lex helped with that, designing a brace that let Alex stand up straight for the first time and after that little Alex wore it the whenever he was not asleep. He would never play football with the other boys or race his bicycle, but he was mobile and learned to make his life a normal one, with some help.
Because he was still growing though, Alex had to constantly have his back brace adjusted to fit him. It was then that he stumbled onto his Uncle’s secret as he nearly ran into the superhero Steelfist slipping out the back way, or rather “Aunt” Vivian dressed as Steelfist. It was at then he learned the truth why Lex and Vivian were so close. He also decided that he wanted no part of the bakery, and since he could not do what they could, he wanted to learn to be the person they went to for the tools they needed to fight crime. His parents were far from happy when Lex took his nephew under his wing to work in his “leather” shop, but they were willing to give their oldest some space and do his own thing after a long family talk.
Besides learning to be a cobbler, Alex began to learn the ins and outs of being an armorer. He met several of his heroes from the newspapers in time, and soaked up his lessons like a sponge. Before long, he had used his new skills to remodel his brace himself, allowing him to stand straighter than ever and still had the range and mobility of Lex’s design. It passed it’s biggest test next, meeting Lex’ approval when Alex ran for the first time in his life.
Not long after, Alex was looking for material for a job when he found a sealed case with what looked like scrap metal panels. Assuming they were for something special, Alex was curious and began to look closer. He found what looked like writing on one section and as he tried to examine it, he took a deep breath to blow some of the strange crystalline like dust. Instead, the dust seemed to gain a glow before it all was drawn in by his big breath. Alex coughed and gagged, before stumbling from the store room and collapsing.
He came to with his uncle kneeling over him, shouting his name and shaking Alex. Alex sat up slowly, able to catch his breath again, and claimed to be okay before explaining what had happened. Lex’ brow furrowed and he went to the store room, only to return and give Alex the scolding of his life. Alex reacted by cowering and jumping back in fright.
Lex stopped mid sentence, gobsmacked. Alex had never jumped back before, and certainly not six feet. They paused a moment to think, then tested if Alex could do it again. Confused, Lex sat his nephew down and made a phone call.
The metal in the case had come from, of all things, a machine man that he and his teammates had defeated protecting a child many years ago. He had planned to use the pieces for a new, more powerful Steelfist suit, but he had tucked it away as he had passed the mantle permanently and forgotten it was there. Why it had affected Alex the way it did, he had no idea.
The best they could determine was the strange dust, which was more like a mould or fungus on closer inspection, had a reaction to Alex that could not be duplicated. For whatever reason, it was changing him, and for the first time in his life, Alexander was able to stand upright without support.
Not only was he able to stand, but his body was changing in other ways. He was stronger, faster and more agile than ever before, all of which he kept hidden from everyone, including his parents. At the same time, Alex was begging Lex to let him follow in his footsteps. It took some time, along with the voice of reason from Vivian, to consider it. Lex called in some favours with old friends to see if Alex’s dream was even possible. Before long, when Alex was supposed to be working, he was actually spending time with the Mayerts’ family learning how to apply his newfound abilities.
It was Augustus that soon started calling Alex by the nickname Little Tank, and the pair soon became sparring mates. Alex caught on quickly from the Mayerts’ how to defend himself and Augustus enjoyed having someone he did not have to hold back with. Things seemed to be progressing well until the day Uncle Lex showed up with a grim look on his face.
Alex could not believe the destruction, his families lifeblood destroyed in a selfless act. His father was in the hospital, beaten nearly to death by the men that had entered the bakery that morning. It took Lex and two of the Mayerts to calm Alex while teenage hormones demanded retribution. In the end it was threat from Lex that convinced his nephew that payback would solve nothing, and if he was foolish enough to not listen and let the police take care of things, then he was on his own and they were done. It angered him to no end, but Alex listened.
With their efforts sunk into rebuilding the bakery, it was by chance Alex overheard two men at the grocer down the block talking about, “the uppity kraut that did not learn his lesson”. Alex managed to to keep calm as he waited to pick up the things he had been sent for while listening to the two men planning to strike again. He considered acting on his own, but to save hard feelings, told Lex everything, including how he intended to be there to stop them.
That night was the first time Lex witnessed what his nephew was capable of, and why Augustus called Alex by the nickname Little Tank. In a matter of moments, five grown men were pummeled into submission without the teen breaking a sweat while the original Steelfist watched with a smile on his face. When it was all said and done, Lex patted him on the shoulder, "A little too savage for my tastes, but I think we can make a hero out of you, Tank. I think it's time you meet someone. I think the two of you will make a great team with." They realized that one of the men had still been semi conscious when the newspaper ran a headline the next day...
Who is The Savage Tank? Five men hospitalized by unknown vigilante. Police baffled
