Three hundred miles from Provo, Utah.....
The three men looked through the one way glass at the young lady seated waiting for her appointment. They were going over the document each of them held in their hands, studying it for something they had missed.
"She is definitely the best candidate." Governor Pat Thompson said as he leafed through the resume yet again. "Boys, unless you see something I don't..."
"I see a world of trouble is what I see." Warden Vance Rickles replied as he dropped his copy on the table. "You sure you want to do this Pat?"
The governor shrugged, "I don't see any options, and if she is half as good as this resume claims, you're damned lucky to have her. She could walk into a job in Langley or Quantico if she wanted, and you're lucky Gramercy or The Sanitarium ain't looking right now."
Rickles nodded, "I know, but look at her. She don't look like no prison guard, let alone in charge of them. The boys will be all over her and I'll have harassment suits to deal with in a week."
"Uh huh, and whoever tries something, that little spitfire will put them in the infirmary. Did you miss where she has multiple black belts in three different martial arts, as well as Navy Seal training before her stint with SCRET? This is your girl Vance." Thompson replied, patting the man on the shoulder. "What's wrong, scared Peg will get the wrong idea?"
"I don't plan on finding out." The Warden replied with a smirk.
"Sir, you've kept Miss Troy waiting twenty minutes now." The third man said, standing back.
"All right Billy, let's go meet her." The governor replied to his aide.
*******
Samantha Troy stood up as the door opened, adjusting her long skirt before holding her portfolio in front of her. She wore a business suit that looked professional while showing off both her toned physique and feminine curves. She knew who all three of the men were as they entered, and she offered a firm handshake, "Governor Thompson, Warden Rickles, nice to meet you."
"Likewise Miss Troy. Sorry to keep you waiting. Might I ask a question before we start the tour? Why do you want to work here at Devil's Ridge? You don't seem like the prison guard type."
"Looking for a change of pace. I'm sure you have gone over my resume and know my history. This sort of opportunity seemed well suited to my skill set yet gives me a chance to settle down a bit." She replied.
Thompson nodded. "Very well, Vance will show you why they call this place The Devil's Pit. Good to have you with us."
"Thank you sir." Samantha smiled and two guards in heavy exoskeletal battle suits stepped out of the elevator as the door opened.
Rickles motioned inside and the four stepped on board. "The elevators for inmates are a bit deceiving. They are buckled in and artificial gravity inverters make it feel as though they are moving away, not down. The actual superhuman containment facility is almost a half mile beneath the surface on an angle that makes it feel more like three in transit. The facility was originally an experimental ballistic missile site before the disarmament of the nuclear stockpiles began. The location makes a highly efficient facility, but that doesn't mean the prisoners all play nice. We have had two attempted breakouts in the past year, but only one has ever been successful since the facility went online six years ago."
"The Custer story. Yes, I read the reports about his so-called Calvary breaking him out." Troy replied with a nod. "I've been involved with operations after them. A very dangerous outfit. You're lucky they left the place in one piece."
"Wasn't for lack of trying." One of their guard escorts butted in.
"I meant no offence, and I'm sure the detail on duty put up a hell of an effort to stop them. So besides human guards instead of robots and underground, what makes this place different from the other superhuman prisons?"
"All of our violent offenders are kept in stasis confinement, Miss Troy." The Warden replied. " Only about thirty percent of our population is active. It cuts down on all of our requirements, and makes life a bit easier for our men and women. With only sixty two inmates to watch out of two hundred and nine in the super containment facility, we have much better control than some of our other facilities. Plus, that gives us a worst case one to one guard ratio, and all on duty personnel are issued combat suits like these with built in lethal and non lethal weapon systems. As soon as you are settled the armoury will have you fitted with your own suit."
The governor took over, " If that is not enough, we have sixteen autonomous systems that can be deployed if need be, and there are several levels of built in defences since the Custer breakout. We take our reputation of being the best facility of our kind very seriously."
The elevator began to slow and then stopped. The doors opened to a pristine white corridor with more guards stationed at the far end of the corridor. The governor led the way off, followed by the Warden, "Ms. Troy, welcome to the Devil's Pit. Might I ask why you accepted the job here?"
"I liked the name." She quipped with a faint chuckle, while as no one could see, her eyes flared black for just a split second.
