Monday - June 23, 1924
It has been six weeks since you returned to the city. For the most part, the Mayerts brothers had been effective at helping keep things under control while you had been away, but all of you had wanted to get back to putting pressure on the various gangs. There were also more rumors of Soviet spies in the city; something else to keep matters interesting.
However, that didn't matter tonight. Tonight, Matt Cannon had cajoled Vivian into a visit to his family's ranch under the pretenses of teaching him some archery. He had been genuinely impressed with her skill and had made it clear it was not part of any attempts at courtship. He also promised Vivian that he wanted to introduce her to someone very important to him; someone she might be impressed by. Vivian was skeptical, of course. Overhearing it, both Lex and Rex were curious enough to tag along, each for their own reasons.
They found themselves out on the Cannon Estates just as the sun was setting. Matt was pacing, looking out past the horizon...

Vivian stares at Cannon Estates before heading in. She had brought her bow and some regular arrows to keep up the pretense that she was going to be teaching him some archery. Turning to Lex and Rex, Vivian asks, "Who do you think this person is?" Vivian shrugs, "I have to admit I'm curious." Vivian sighs and says, "Well, let's see what's going on." As they start to head inside, Vivian thinks to herself 'If this is a scam, I swear he's getting an arrow through his foot.'

"No idea." Lex replied as he folded his arms in fromt of him. He was never fond of surprises, and since he had gotten mixed up with since he and Vivian were working alone. "Relax kiddo, Rex and I will be chaperoning, so unless the kid pays us off, we'll make sure things stay civilized." He grinned, knowing he was not really helping.

Six weeks of research frustration, a visit to the Cannon Ranch is a refreshing change, even if under the pretense of chaperoning. Rex straightened the work shirt he wore for the occasion, red 1923 Packard Twin Six parked nearby. "I can't blame him for wanting to learn archery. Something I might take up. Quiet, effective, and easier to make than a pistol."

Vivian turns and smiles at Rex as they head toward Matt. "If you want, I can teach you some archery as well."

Matt claps his hands together and looks out. "Come on, come on."
A man on horseback approaches from the horizon. His pace is quick, his control of the horse perfect and unwavering.
"...old man's still got it." Matt grinned.
Once he came into view, his age was apparent; he had to be in his late 70s or later. His hair was thin and silver, but still well trimmed underneath the beaten up cowboy hat. His eyes were as dark as Matt's, and aged had not diminished their intensity or focus as he sized up each of you in turn. If it wasn't for the eyes, he might have seemed comical or tragic - this diminished old man in denim riding with an antique revolver on his hip. But that gaze met any glance with a fierceness that time could not dim.
"Rex, Lex, Viv...meet my grandpa, Caleb Cannon. I take after his tradition, if you get my meaning."
The meaning was clear; this old man was the first Dark Rider - the myth, the legend. The first masked crimefighter; a mysterious gunfighter in the Old West who had been feared by lawbreakers west of the Mississippi in the 1880s.
He cleared his throat. "Evenin'."

Vivian rolls her eyes at Lex's comment and thinks 'He's really not helping!'
When they head inside, Vivian is curious about who the man on horseback is. She is surprised when they learn it's the original Dark Rider. Unsure of what to say, Vivian falls back on the etiquette her mother had drilled into her from the time she learned how to walk. Smiling politely, Vivian says, "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir."

Rex smiles, "I would appreciate that. I doubt I would ever be as expert as you are, knowing how to use a bow would prove handy."
The original Dark Rider reigning the horse in, Rex tries not to appear as shocked as he truly is. "...*the* Dark Rider?...holy moly...Colonel Stanson talked about you at length!"

"I was hoping you were talking to him and not me." Lex smirked. Though he had taught her, Vivian had far surpassed his skill with a bow. He refocused his attention as Matt introduced his guest. He nodded respectfully," Good to meet you, sir."

The old man looked at the guys, then the girl. He smiled at Matt. "Heh." The smile disappeared just as quickly as it appeared. He then turned to Rex. "Colonel Stanson? Heh...I remember a Stanson...right, the Mason gang." He rubbed his jaw. "He was a First Lieutenant then. How's he doing?"
Shaking his head a moment, he turned back to Vivian. "I understand you're teaching Matt archery? Good luck with that. Heavens knows I tried. Boy relies too much on his pistols and that tommy I gave him."

"Mason gang? That's one he never mentioned. Hasn't missed a step, even during the great war."

Vivian is a bit taken aback by the old man's reaction and feels a bit shy. "He asked me if I would teach him, sir." she replies quietly. "So I will try."

The mention of the War causes Caleb's head to sink a bit. "Good to hear." He looks to the others. "Any of you eat? I'm putting on some chili, it'll keep 'till after you're done." He looks at Matt, then Vivian. "Good luck." He heads inside.
Matt smiles. "So, let's get started."

Lex looked at Rex and shrugged. " The kids don't really need us, junoir makes any wrong moves and Viv will take him." He chuckled as he watched the elder Rider go," And, I haven't had a good chili since I moved home. Unless you want to watch, I say we get some pointers from a real hero."

"Talked to plenty of real heroes Lex. I'm not saying he isn't a hero or has nothing useful to say. Heroes come in all forms, all you have to do is look." Shrugs. "Chili, haven't had that...huh...not sure I ever did. How bad can it be?"
