Rex smiled, passing by the Duchess, pausing as if making sure he's seeing what he is, smiles more. "Duchess? Rex, Rex Cranston. Didn't we meet at the Hopewell social gathering a year ago?"

Vivian nods, feeling a bit nervous, unsure of how her mother would react to the letter. 'Let's get this over with.' Vivian thinks to herself. "Yes, mother." Vivian pauses before saying "I've received a job offer to work as a chef." Vivian hands her mother the envelope so she can read the letter. "Lex got the same job offer, so I wouldn't be off on my own." Vivian fully expects her mother to not be pleased with this so she stops talking and waits for a reaction.

Lex's sister manages a small smile. "Yes, yes that could work." She finishes the dough and puts it in to cook.
The Duchess smiles at Rex. She's wearing a very conservative yet aristocratic outfit as she looks Rex over. "Yes...you're the...forgive me? I meet so many people, I forget exactly your field of endeavor, sir?"
Vivian's mother took her time reading the letter. She set it down and smiled. "This is a wonderful opportunity dear! I've always said you should travel abroad, and so many of the well to do on these expeditions are handsome young men. This is perfect for you! We must begin ordering a new wardrobe for you right away. I'll call the tailor." She holds your face between her hands; her grin threatening to strain her face past the breaking point. "I'm so happy for you."
Caleb will prepare his business holdings, as he telegraphs the message to the Duchess.

Lex leaned over and kissed his sister on the forehead. "Thanks Sis, you are the best. Don't worry, Vivian is going too, so she can keep me out of trouble. I'll be back as soon as I can" He started for the door, intent to pack and get moving.

Vivian is shocked by her mother's excitement at first until she realizes that her mother thinks it's another opportunity for her to find a husband. Resisting the urge to sigh, Vivian forces a smile, wishing she had just lied and said she wasn't able to go on the trip, says, "I don't need a new wardrobe, mother, but thank you. You're very kind to offer."

"Rex Cranston, philanthropist. Currently sponsoring some sort of archeaological trip in South America."

Lex's sister gives a small smile as Lex leaves to begin packing.
"Oh, but I insist dear! South America! We will need to get you something colorful, not this drab material from Kansas!" Vivian's mother declares as she begins to write down a list.
The Duchess smiles. "Yes! Of course! Forgive me, I've been dreadfully busy with the logistics of the expedition! Is there anything you wish to know, good sir?"

Rex smiles, "Curiosity over what exactly you hope to discover in this expedition. And I hope you don't mind if I come along. I've always loved seeing new places, even if I'm not the best at surviving."

Lex went to pack his things. He wanted to take his suit, but it would be a dead giveaway who Steelfist was if the city protector suddenly appeared on the expedition. Instead he decided on his hunting bow and .45s. He thought for a moment, considering taking his Tommy Trencher, but the gun was heavy to carry for long periods of time and not something he wanted to lump with him. Loading his duffel full of extra clothes, he tossed in a notebook in case he got some ideas on the trip.

Realizing she'd never change her mother's mind, Vivian forces a polite smile and says, "Thank you, Mother. It is very generous of you to do this."

The Duchess smiles at Rex. "You are too kind. We leave by airship within the week. I look most forward to your...participation."
Lex gets confirmation he'll have a lot of room on the airship for whatever provisions he'll need.
Vivian's mother takes her shopping for a whole new wardrobe.
(GM Note: I plan on jump-cutting to the actual expedition, if that's alright)

"Airship? Do not believe I've ever had the pleasure of one of those."

"Airship?" Lex said to himself aloud as he read the notification, and was puzzled

THREE WEEKS LATER
The Zeppelin clears the skies above Peru.
Rex, Caleb, Vivian and Matt Cannon were having an afternoon tea with the Duchess along with several of the other financiers and some of the expedition party. The financial backers were all too familiar, even if the specifics were different - would-be adventurers for whom writing a check was strenuous exercise. The actual expedition crew seemed of a sterner, if seedier, lot. Many of them were native to Peru, with hard faces and thick stubble. Their clothing was practical, worn and rough.
Lex was, as usual, busy getting items out onto the floor. The people the Duchess had hired had no idea how to do their jobs.

Lex grumbled as he worked. He did not mind helping out, but that did not mean he was there to be part of the help. Still, he did not fit with the others and their high society image, so he accepted his place whether he liked it or not and tried to get things done.
