Ch. 8 - Back in Action

Tori flashed a signal for "one dead," then took cover. She briefly thought of looking for the rat's weapon, but whatever was coming was likely a much bigger concern than an unarmored rat. Silently, she hoped it was the target. That would take days out of a search and destroy op. She wished she was on the other side of the road with her partner and the team, but it could mean the enemy spotting her or finding everyone else. All she could do was hide, watch and wait.

Janxi heard the approaching vehicle and went low after she gave Tori a nod for acknowledging her kill. She hoped it was the target so they could call in the strike and go home.

As the team took cover, a vehicle did rumble into the clearing. A mountaineer ATV rolled into sight. Atop it sat a lone armed figure. The rider looked human but was had to tell at the range.

[Tori]

There wasn't much for Tori to do on her own. The team might have enough firepower to take down the ATV, but she didn't know if they were even hostile. If they were, they would likely sound the alarm and who knew what might come looking for the team.

She watched the ATV to get a better idea of who they were and what they wanted. She studied the vehicle, and the arms and armor of the guy in the commander's hatch for clues.

Silently watching, she hoped the rat didn't call for reinforcements. She didn't see a radio, but he could have sent a runner.

Or maybe someone tracked the team's signal.

The voice in Janxi's head repeated, "Don't stop. Don't stop," over and over. The last thing the team needed was a firefight. She readied her weapon and waited. At least it wasn't a Splugorth barge.

Well it is a waiting game once again. Takota Remains behind his cover but he is quite ready to spring into action if needed. He knows that if the approaching group has any kind of optics the squad had most likely already been seen or would be seen rather quickly so it was just a matter of staying put and what their move would be. He would welcome either outcome ... friendlies or a fight.

As she takes cover, Sam looks through the scope of her rifle, hoping to determine who the lone figure is. She hopes the lone figure doesn't detect the team and continue on their way.

Half way between tori and the rest of the squad, the vehicle stopped and the lone figure leapt down to the ground. by the way he moved, it was clear he was more than anormal human, but it wasn't until he hit the ground that his chemical harness was visible as he started checking tracks.

Tori readied her rifle. She saw the harness, but didn't know if he was friend or foe. The thing about juice-boxes is they would hire out to anyone. She suspected he was not on her side, but didn't feel like provoking a war just yet. She trained her rifle on him and waited for orders, or for him to do something that would provoke her. She continued to study him and his vehicle.

"Ahhh a juice box. I've been waitin' fer one of them," thought a particularly malicious Janxi. Her mother raised her to hate juicers above all.

The fact that he stopped there was a telling sign someone picked up their transmission, and likely wished her team harm. She would wait until Six gave the word, and attack without mercy.

"Copy." Kain replies through his radio, keeping out of sight of the juicer. He was ready to open up on him but really needed a damn good reason to punch his number. Splorguies could be hiring out locale talent for work in this area but more than likely they would be using their own agents they could trust or brain washed into trusting their masters.

The juicer didn't seem to either notice or care as he stood up and called to the vehicle. " Been through here all right. Looks like that cat might be prowling around here too."

A voice called back through a speaker. "Never mind him, we ain't getting paid to handle stripes."

thi juicer took on last lok around and then climbed back on the Mountaineer and it began to move.
