Ch. 8 - Back in Action

[Tori]

Tori keyed her mic once to acknowledge Janxi's transmission. Then the image of the predator entered her mind. Good ol' Janxi to watch her back. Janx at her six was better than eyes in the back of her head.

She kept her weapon ready, and would gladly take the face off a dinosaur that decided a little fishing cat would make a good appetizer. She also knew how predators focused on prey, and hoped mama and junior wouldn't notice a couple of kitties.

Tori moved slowly and deliberately, keeping a tree between herself and the dinosaur. She inched ever so slightly around the circumference of the trunk. If the lizard went for her, it would have to go around or through the tree. Not that it couldn't, but it would give a speedy little cat time to escape, or to make it painful for a lizard.

She trusted her camouflage, and her feline stealth, that was billions of years evolved from a crude lizard. Then she engaged her thermals, just to make sure these things didn't hunt in a pack like lion shagcats. She wasn't scared, but she waited with some apprehension all the same.

Sam keys her mic once to acknowledge Janxi's recommendation and immediately tries to hide among the trees, hoping that she or the rest of the team won't be noticed and the dinos will continue on their way.

[Takota]

"Copy." is all that Takota says through his armor's radio after getting both of Janxi's messages. Not making any sudden movements Takota turns so that he can keep the two stalkers in view while at the same time edging closer to a tree to use as cover. He turns the CI-404 toward the two dinosaurs just in case they decide to turn their attention toward him or anyone else in the squad. Blending himself into the foliage he tries to keep himself hidden from the dinasaurs.

[dakota]

things suddenly went chaotic as the young Allosaurus sprung it's ambush too soon. It charged forward towards Tori and Takota, while the stegosaurus herd turned and headed the other way honking loudly. The momma Allosaurus moved forward so close that her shadow hung over Kain and Shep.

Caught in the middle, all the rest of the squad could do was watch as the Allosaurus pup actually stepped between Tori and Takota, stopping with a snort as it failed. It's tail gave a whip, striking Takota's helmet and glancing off. (no damage, but enough need a balance check)

[Tori]

Tori continued to wait with the tree between herself and the allosaurs. The last thing she wanted to do was present herself as a possible consolation prize for the frustrated family. Not that she would be an easy meal by any means, but avoiding the fight meant saving shots for the rats. If anyone didn't know Tori was there, she would seem invisible. She watched and waited, hoping Takota would recover and avoid detection, but waited to see if the big cat would avoid trouble. She'd light the dinos up if need be, but hoped it wouldn't come to that.

[Janxi]

Janxi watched the tom she called "her mate" get tailslapped and hissed reflexively. She raised her rifle and sighted the offending allosaur, but held her fire.

Then she realized the mama was much more dangerous than the cub, and sighted her for a headshot, and again waited. Hopefully, with their stalk busted, they would leave. Failing that, Big Jaglion would light them up and shred. For now, though, she waited in silence.

[foxx]

Kain freezes like a statue on the ground when big momma dinos shadow falls over him. He could hear the heard moving away and hope very strongly that the Allosaurus would do the same thing. He continue to keep his weapon ready in case he needs to make the baby dino an orphan in order to prevent his sudden consumption.

[Takota]

Halting his progress toward the trees when the allosaurus charges Takota tries to keep his weapon aimed at the big beasties though again attempting to keep his movement slow and steady.

When the tail whips around and strikes him the leopards instinct and first thought is to pull the trigger on his weapon and let the dinosaur feel the searing pain of a few bolts of energy. Rational thought keeps him from doing that thought. Instead Takota uses the hit to help move him toward a tree for better cover rather than stand in the open.

Should that plan fail ... well then he will just have to let loose with a barrage of fire from the CI-404.

[Mierin]

San tenses when Takota gets hit by the tail but realizes that moving would give away everyone's position so she stays still for the moment with baited breath, hoping the dinosaurs will continue on their way.

[dakota]

The young Allosaurus' tail whipped wildly, nearly striking Takota again as he let the first one knock him aside, but it didn't give chase to the fleeing Stegosaurus herd.


The mother Allosaurus leaded down towards Shep and Kain, blowing out a snort so close that Kain's vision was clouded for a second as his lenses steamed, then Momma gave two deep honked and turned away and began to move off. The young Allosaurus turned at her call and tromped after her, moving right through the column. It stopped at one point and listened, but another honk from Momma and it picked up speed.

As soon as they were out of sight, Scope cried out in pain," Oh shit. It stepped on my foot. I think it broke my toes!"

[Tori]

Tori made sure the dinos were gone, rather than lurking for another ambush. Her little round ears swiveled like tiny radar dishes. Satisfied the coast was clear, she emerged from her hiding spot and headed for Scope.

"Pipe down or they'll be right back here looking for a lame trooper..." Tori hissed at a low volume. "That's why they make armored boots. Take off your boot and let's have a look."

Tori began to assess the wound. She asked for toe wiggles, poking and prodding as gently as possible. "Not a lot I kin do if it's toes, other than tape 'em. If it's metatarsals, I kin set the bones an' splint 'em. I'd recommend evac, but wif that gun out there, you ain't goin' nowhere. I'll give ya a non-narcotic painkiller, too, so you ain't miserable, but ain't higher than the Emperor's office in Chi-Town."

If foot bones were broken, she would set them back into place, unfortunately quite painfully, warning Scope to "Think of ice cream," before she began. She would then set a splint around it to keep the bones in place. If only toes, she would tape the broken ones together, preferably to an unbroken toe.

"You might look for somethin' to use fer a cane or crutch an' take as much weight off that bad paw as yew kin!" She passed him some heavy duty ibuprophen from her bag. "One of these, every 4 to 6 hours, as needed."

[foxx]

Kain lets out a big breath after the dino mom and child leave the area. That was far closer than he ever wants to get to something that big. He rises himself to a crouch position, looking through the thermal scope to watch the dangerous duo leave their operation area. They will have to continue to watch for them while they work, but at least they manage to avoid serious trouble.

"Guess I should be glad I didn't wear a pork chop around my neck." Kain says over to Shep.

[Janxi]

When Tori moved in to inspect Scope, Janx rushed in to cover both of them from the treeline.

"Clear, at least until Scope's sobbin' brings 'em back." She kept her rifle in the general direction of the dinos. She watched their tracks to see if they were leaving, or trying to be coy and double back for a second attempt.

"Tori's right 'bout one thing. We should use UAV's, tha cheap ones, to lure tha gun outta hidin'... This here's a big foxin' swamp, wif big rez-dents. Let's getta few eagles to overfly. We'll get a shot and kin track it back, er will gitta nice photorecon pass. Raght now, this here's a snipe hunt."

"I know they make armored boots. Look at the foxin' thing!" Scope snapped back. As Tori examined, the side of Scope's boot was deformed as he pulled it off. He lifted his visor to get a better look while Tori examine," Your bedside manner sucks." He said lowly. The two smallest toes were bent at odd angles. " I ain't medivacing out because of that." He took one of the painkillers while she worked, looking more pissed than hurt.

"Give me his pack." Det offered over the team radio. "We lighten him up and he can keep up. Captain, Janxi's right. Any chance we can rustle up some bait for that gun?""


Shep gave Kain a pat on the shoulder, " No kidding. We'd both be lunch if she'd spotted us. The pork chop necklace is a nice idea, maybe I'll send Tank one as a peace offering."


There was no sign of dinos in either direction and the swamp's normal sounds were starting to return to normal.

[Tori]

Tori dug into her pack and found an MRE. She ripped it open as Scope whined and fished out the accessory pack. In it, she found Charms, the most hated food ever and grimaced. "Figures I'd go to give ya a lollipop, and all they have is Charms! Here ya go anyway. Doc T's all out of lollipops. You've been a brave little soldier." She gave him a nuzzle to show she was just taking the piss out of him. "Sing out if ya have any severe pain or you think it's gittin' worse."

She looked up at Sam. "Two busted piggies. I've got 'em taped up. He'll be able to walk awrite, but we oughta take pretty frequent breaks. Anyone else got anything for sick call?" Her gaze fell upon Shep.
