Janxi felt a pang of jealousy when Tori asked Socrates to join her, but realized a nose was a good addition. She pulled the boat ashore, and lashed it to a mangrove, in case the tide came up. Taking the nets from under the seat, she began to camouflage the craft, cutting vegetation from trees and adding debris from the ground. All the while, she kept close eye on Tori and Socrates, and the humans at the boot.
"Oooh-rah, Sam. 'S'wut we do. Glad yer five-by-five, Shep."

"'It would be best if you did, then I can focus further away." He said to Tori.
Socrates did his scan, five yards back and further out than Tori, relying her movements to detect nearby problems while he sensed further out.
The comm static was in the back of his mind, though.

Before Socrates and Tori did their patrol, Shep looked at the dog boy while turing over the helmet and showing a broken chin strap," It was on, smartass.. That thing's tongue hit me hard enough it tore the strap.
Watching the two move out, Shep looked pale and was weak from getting sick, but he still managed to get to his feet, leaning on Janxi. " You kids did all right." Taking a cue from watching the two cats, he rubbed his head under the biiger cats' chin before pulling on his helmet," Cap, is it too late to go home to requesition a new helmet?"
While the others waited, the normal sounds of the night began to fill the air. As Tori and soc moved deeper, they found little evidence that they anything was about to cause them greif.

"Heard your mic key, and thought that's what it was when we realized ya got snagged... " Janxi passed him her full canteen and grabbed her XO into a close embrace when he threw her a nuzzle.
"We ain't gonna let nuthin happen to our people..."
She removed her helmet and gave him the warmest and furriest nuzzle of his life. A housecat's headbutt at about 10 times the scale. Her purr reverberberated from his head to his toes. A whole body sonic massage, complete with soft silky fur and warmth. There was no stress in a jaglion embrace. And her black fur? Every bit as silky as mink!
Reluctantly breaking away, she continued to work on throwing cammies over the boat. She was clearly dissatisfied with the boat's profile remaining intact, and tampered more with the nets, vegetation and debris. "We gotta stash the boat..."

Tori returned to the boat, watching the surprising scene. Her tail's twitched with happiness. She removed her helmet and turned to Socrates. "Looks like Cpl. Janxi has a new human."
She heard treefrogs, bullfrogs, crickets and birds. The hungry toad was likely elsewhere, and the beach seemed relatively safe.
"Six, Shep? Beach is secure. Me 'n Janx'll take first watch, if ya want." Her voice was soft and purry, showing she was at rest for once. The feeling of safety wouldn't last, but she would enjoy it while she could.

Socrates returned to camp. He wanted to ask Jin what they should expect, here, but considering the misunderstanding about something as simple as a 20-foot-long frog, he thought the better of it.
He opened his helmet, rather than removing it. "You only need a single human?" He asks. "What's wrong with a pack?" He grinned a little. "Besides the smell, I mean."

"Soccer-tease? This here comes from our less-evolved brothers and cousins, but it a true word anyhow. Back when your kind and ours was called pets, humans wrote this here slogan. 'Dogs have owners, and cats have staff.' We shagcats pick our people more than a people can pick us."
Jan made it a point to preen a little, but gazed up at Soc. "Dogs have packs, but cats earn friends."

"C'mon you three. Lighten up." Shep said much softer than normal." You got along fine when you were saving me. In fact you made one helluva team. Let's try to keep it up. Captain, permission to curl up and pass out?" He looked at Sam.

"I am pretty light." Socrates said. The arrogance behind the phrase Janxi chose to quote was no bother him, nor the fact the cats just had to be right, all the time.
"Jin, is a fire wise at this point in time?"

Sam looks over and Tori and nods, "Sure. Socrates and I can take second watch." Sam nods at Shep, "Permission granted."

"Better not a fire. Iffen ya want hot chow, use a MRE heater. I don't wanna risk the extra light." Tori did just that, selecting a sloppy joe pack, and a second pack with buffalo chicken. She slid both packs and side dishes into a larger pack and seemed to seal it off.
Into a pocket on the large pouch, she poured water and placed it on the ground. Without smoke, the water caused a chemical reaction, creating heat. Within a couple of minutes, she pulled out the warm MRE's and passed one to Janxi, with the sloppy joe for herself. She spread it over some "snack bread, wheat" and dotted it with Tabasco before taking a bite.
"Jan weren't insultin' ya Socrates. She just mean we don't have no pack mentality. But I reckon if we had a pack, it'd be you, Sam and Shep. And I guess you too, Jin. "

"I never said I was insulted." Socrates said."And I would defer to the local expert."

"Soccer-tease? We're in the heart of rat country. We don't need no beacon they kin see 'n smell for miles. It'll fox up our nightvision and thermals, too, plus it ain't cold so we don't need no heat. We got a way to warm chow wifout it, plus predators like yer alligators will be drawn to the light. Me and Tori are on first watch, and you'll be wantin' us seein good, I'd expect. No fire." Her voice was firm but even.
She accepted the buffalo chicken from Tori and spread it over a cracker digging in as if she hadn't eaten in a week, then passed the "Santa Fe Rice and Beans" to Socrates.
"Ya want some?"

At Janxi comment about not needing heat, Shep muttered," Speak for yourself" as he curled up under a poncho, his helmet and pack used for a pillow. "Wake me when it's my shift." he said with chattering teeth before starting snore lightly.
Jin nodded in agreement concerning the fire, and despite the others offer of watch, he climbed a tree and never seemed to sleep.
First watch went without incident as the swamp returned to normal, with little to draw the cats interest except for an infestation of fireflies that moved through the camp. Just as the shift exchange was made, a low snorting could be heard approaching, mixed with grunting.
